my aprilia is dead again

well, was out rippin this morning with a friend, and was on my way home and bike died on me on rt 24. dash shut off and bike died so i pulled off to the side of the highway. smelled smoke, and saw smoke coming from the starter. touched the starter switch and it popped out. pretty common problem with shiver owners. bike is back at seacoast until who knows when.

was heading home to grab my things to go back to ny too (450 miles from my house to school). that would have sucked but i consider myself lucky for being close to home at the time. o well, take the good with the bad i guess.
its interesting i havnt made a payment yet and its died 3 times already... what can you do?

Re: my aprilia is dead again

ya, its a pretty common problem as far as i can tell from the prila forum. but aprilia seems to also take their sweet time sending parts to the US.

as far as seacoast goes, its my third major problem, and every single time they have been more then helpful and accomodating. nothing but good things to say about them.

Looks like a candidate for the lemon law ... when is the bike lust gonna wear off and reality going to set in?

its wearing. what would qualify it for a lemon law buy back? the first two problems the bike went into limp mode but i was still able to ride it. but this time the bike is unrideable. not too up on my laws.

ya I believe for autos it is if you have 3 problems with it within a month or something like that? I am guessing its the same for a motorcycle possibly. Sorry to hear your bad luck with it.

Re: my aprilia is dead again

got it, just looked it up. i dont quite qualify yet. its either 3 trys to fix one problem or if your ride is in the shop for more then a total of 15 days (doesnt have to be all the same problem). then the manufacturer itself has 7 days to fix your shit.

i really dont want to get into that legal battle. id rather aprilia just send revised parts and just fix my shit. theres really no other bike on the market id rather have, well maybe the hyper...

Re: my aprilia is dead again

ya, I hear you. In that case, hopefully they just revise this part that is faulty/junk and you will be good to go soon. The worst thing is when a manufacturer has a defect and just replaces it with another defective "oem" part over and over.

i hope thats not the case here. a bunch of shiver owners have this problem as well. hopefully aprilia has noticed the problem and revised it. we'll see...

Re: my aprilia is dead again

How many miles are on the bike? I'm sure they'll get it sorted. My Mille went back in for a few small issues, once they were out of the way it's been pretty much smooth sailing. Good luck, I hope Aprilia can get the parts out quickly.

Re: my aprilia is dead again

i got 1200 miles roughly. seacoast is about an hourish from my house but theres really no other dealer id want to go to. they have my other problem documented so i figured the paper trail would be easier to follow if it was all with them.

Re: my aprilia is dead again

Wagners is about twenty minutes from me, I still go the extra forty minutes to get to Seacoast. I cracked up my Mille pretty good and they got the parts and swapped out my frame in record time, and you couldn't tell the bike had been touched after they were done. The Shiver is a pretty big deal for Aprilia, I'm sure they are working it out.

cool to hear you got stuff back pretty quick. about the shiver being Piaggios (sp) big bike since their take over, id hope they would be able to act quick. we'll see.

the good news is, jim informed me they got exhausts they can order now . they were going to check on regearing it too.

NH does not have to adhere to the lemon laws.

Sorry to hear this, I am pretty interested in this bike as well...I blindly just hope these issues don't happen on first year models.

Has any of the Shiver owners who've had it fixed had a reoccurance? Hopefully, it just gets sorted and works for you. Its no fun not trusting your bike will get you to your destination.

apparently aprilia had a revised switch. but an owner that got this "new" switch had it stick on him so i guess its not really all that much better.

right now i have a problem trusting this machine. its not a weekend fun toy for me, i ride it everyday 80 miles to and from work. and then from rochester to mass every now and again. looks like ill have to check the button from now on just for peace of mind.

Re: my aprilia is dead again

This sounds not far off my experiences with my sxv550. It is really great how Aprilia lets their customers' finish the product development and testing for the new bikes. Seacoast has been great, but my bike has been very frustrating. I hope the shiver ends up with a better track record than my bike. I am seriously considering trading my bike in on an 848.

Ouch, not to off thread, but has any of the Tuono people had similar problems?

My wife likes the shiv, but I wouldn't want her to get caught breaking down on it. What were the first two problems that you had before the starter switch?

the first two problems happened two days after i got it. had a couple hundred miles on it. on a pretty slow paced group ride, the bike went into "limp mode" twice while going through town. Dealer pulled the trouble codes and it had something to do with the intake manifolds or something. Even though it has never happened again, i still consider it a problem. Could have been an electrical /software glitch BUT it does not neglect the fact that it was sputtering and dying as i was traveling through a busy town center with lots of traffic i.e. safety issue.

if your wife likes the bike, i would definitely tell her to hold off on the bike. if you check out 2008 Shiver SL750 - ApriliaForum sponsored by AF1 Racing, inc., you can keep an eye on other shiver owners. Seems like just about everyone is having the same problems and others are discovering new ones. unfortunate, such a "high-end" company can leave so many loose ends.
