My new (and much improved) plate bracket

anybody who was at newbury st. the other night and noticed the R1 with a licence plate bracket hanging and facing almost directly downwards with no inspection sticker...that was mine. my plate along with my sticker were stolen, so that was just a temporary fix. now, with inspiration from jim (DB) i have self made myself a new bracket (and this time its legal)

i cut out an L shape out of a side plate mount and used an L bracket to put it on the passenger peg. turned out pretty nice, now just need the sticker

does it fold back when you ride. my friends gixxer had something similar and it flopped all over the place when we rode. i was always waiting for it to fling off and hit me.

I had one made from L-brackets and it flew off
and I forever lost my "KLBLL" license plate
NH would not reissue it.

mine keeps getting loose from passengers stepping on it. I have to check it every few weeks & tighten the bolt up again.

maybe if i plan on going fast or on the highway ill bend it vertically (illegally) to lessen the wind resistance

The thread title should read:

My new (and much improved) and illegally mounted plate bracket.

Were you able to pass inspection with it mounted like that?

no havent gone to get it inspected yet. probably not until wednesday or thursday, but whats illegal about it? besides the fact that it isnt lit up yet, its legal to mount it on the side as long as its horizontal and not vertical

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

to legally pass inspection, the plate has to be mounted between the directionals and behind the rear tire

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

legally shmegally. jim, did you pass inspection with your plate the way it is, or did you do it afterwards? i couldve sworn that as long as the plate is horizontal its legal

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

lol well thanks for the help jim. in any case, i feel pretty confident that it would pass inspection, because so far im cannot find anything that says the plate cant be mounted as such. it seems to be vertical=illegal, horizontal(and legible)=legal

just going with what i've been told from dealerships that wouldnt pass me last year. and just an using zip ties to your passenger pegs still wont pass, even though it's between the directionals

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

well apparently the HD Nightster comes stock with a horizontal side mount bracket, so how do you explain that?...ive seen nothing so far about this "between the directionals" stuff. on my bike, the directionals are integrated with the brakes lights, even if i tried i couldnt fit my plate between that space...

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

well theres pics of it in my first post. i just used an l bracket, and then sawed an L shape out of a side mount bracket for extra sturdiness. its not lit up yet though...

Re: My new (and much improved) plate bracket

yea im busy until god knows when with a whole bunch of shit. next free day to go riding isnt until like friday and saturday night. at first i had the plate screwed on the L bracket with only 1 screw (the top right corner) and was a little flimsy, and then i sawed the L shape and now its screwed into the top left, top right, and bottom right. doesnt feel like its going anywhere

I was wondering how long it would take before this was referred to as a Harley mount. Harleys don't have to worry about speed causing enough wind resistance to tear the plate off or lean angles that might drag the plate on the ground mid corner.

You should hang a bell off of the end like cruiser riders do. Unfortunately the bell can't be purchased by yourself, a friend needs to gift it to you for good luck. Maybe Jim can hook you up and you can return the favor.
