+2 sprockets in the back...

....feel amazing!!

i paid a visit to derek tonight for bike repairs and i can't wipe this smile off my face
got rid of my stock 530 chain, and derek installed an 520 rk chain with +2 in the back.

i accelerated hard today and wow... it's 10x faster than before. yeah the old chain was really about to go, i'm surprised that it didn't break and whip me in the leg.

thanks derek for everything!!!

i look forward to meeting the rest of you guys that derek mentioned
oh and pete aka oreo, i'm hopefully going to go out to the next trackday to watch but hopefully i'll meet ya before then

Its something I've considered too.

Although if you were about to break a 530, why'd you go 520?

i have -1/+2 with a 525 chain on my 600. bought the bike with that, so i dont know what the difference is from stock. it changed my speedo +15% though, so you may want to look into buying the speedohealer

That explains why you shift 5 times before 40mph

I like 1st through 5th with -1/+2 but I wish I could keep 6th gear stock for highway riding.

the old chain was the one from the previous owner, and it didn't look like it had been maintained too well...

the 520 on that bike shouldn't be too bad since it's not making 902380528935hp, but i probably would've hedged my bets with a 525 just to be safe. if you need the bike to be faster, do a trackday, lol.

just make sure to clean your chain every 300 miles. i learned the hard way when my chain snapped & wrapped around my leg

the 530 chain was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overdue for a change, i bought the bike from another guy and the chain was already on it

and yes, i wish there was a 7th highway only gear cause now i cruise at 70mph at around 6-7k rpm's instead of the old 5-6, but still the accleration is ridiculous now.

Re: +2 sprockets in the back...

You know another cheaper alternative is, if your chain and sprockets don't have too many miles on them and aren't worn....save some $ and go -1 front. $20 or so for the new front sprocket.

-1 front is about the same as +2.7 rear.
I went -1 front for this season, but I also ditched the 190/50 for a 190/55 (higher profile, was like subtracting a tooth from the rear sprocket) So next spring when I give it new chain and sprockets, gonna stick with -1 front and go +1 rear to compensate for the 190/55

All done with 50 series tires
the 55 is where it's at

this is what mine is and im trying to put it back on because the whole underside of my bike looks like garbage and gets dirty as hell without the hugger. I've just got this one phillips head bolt in the swingarm for the brake line bracket that refuses to budge, anyone have any ideas? or anyone with an extractor willing to help? haha

Re: +2 sprockets in the back...

i went -1/+2 520. never had anything but a 520 for some reason, ?.
i have that Maxima wax, but hate it, cant clean it off anything... so i use Motul or Bel-Ray lube.
anyone find any big difference/benefits between wax and lube?

Re: +2 sprockets in the back...

Chain wax? Whats that? Oh the stuff I use to use.

Go to Lowes, Ace, foggs, even some bike shops perhaps, and look for the Dupont Mutli-Use Lubricant.....liquid teflon in a can

It doesn't fly off, dirt / sand etc doesn't stick to it. It doesn't turn your countershaft cover / clutch push-rod / front of the swing arm into a nightmare.

Spraying it on, hiting the chain from the master back to the master (once) seems to last 450 or so miles. After that you can hear the chain getting dry...so lube the chain every 400 miles and you'd be set.

clean it real good before you switch to this stuff. Until this stuff goes off the market, I'll not be buying anymore chain wax.

520 chain and sprockets are lighter than 525 or 530. I'm not sure how much, because there are a bunch of different chains and sprockets (hard anodized aluminum rear is the way to go)

basically you're reducing rotating mass, you'll improve acceleration and what not. Probably not too much need to do it on the street but a lot of people do. I've never switched myself so I can't tell you if you'd feel a difference.

If you like to stunt / wheelie a lot, a 520 conversion might not be a good idea.

520 rear sprockets are only available in aluminum. unless you're on the track, stick with a stock 525 or 530 chain

this was my thought, ive only seen 520 sprockets in aluminum and from what i hear they dont hold up nearly as well. I like to do some wheelies occasionally but ive always done them on the stock gears
