Re: so... how do you wheelie?

to me, 2nd gear was frustrating. i learned in first because you pick it up more consistantly, you can learn it a parking lot, there's more engine braking to save you, and obviously you're not going nearly as fast.

that being said, anyone that wheelies a lot will tell you that clutch wheelies are the way to go. practice them and get comfortable and you'll be able to wheelie just about any bike out there. power wheelies are garbage because you need to be at the right spot in the powerband to do them, and if you get them up high at all you'll probably be out of rpms to work with.

Clutch wheelies are nice because once you get used to them theyre more predictable, you can do them at just about any rpm, and when you get good at them you need much less space.

ok that being said...cruise between 15 and 20 in first, squeeze the clutch just until the motor starts to spin up, rev the motor up to 5,000 rpms, quickly but smoothly release the clutch(think of leaving a stop sign quickly), rinse and repeat adding 1000 or 2000 rpms with each attempt until you're consistantly lifting the front. Its as simple as that, but like the article explains, dont expect to learn it in one session of practice. be happy with getting it up a little bit but consistantly, then practice practice practice.

Ok thats my explanation that I now realize is very similar to the stuntlife explanation, hmm good advice...always cover the rear brake! For the most part if you're in front of balance point then gravity and engine braking will save you, but if you get up way to high you'll need to use that brake.

I never ever wheelie on group rides, ive been known to if its me and 1 or 2 friends but I wouldnt recommend it especially while in the learning process. Doing them in traffic is just a terrible idea all around, theres way too many ways to fuck up.

Ok thats my advice, im gonna go wait for a PM from a mod banning me

Touche.

Seriously though, I don't mind wheelies, as long as they don't pose a danger to anyone else. If you're in the back of the pack on a group ride and feel like pulling it up go for it. (as long as there isn't a line of cars behind you.)

I just like busting balls, that's all. Just like 99% of the people on here.

All that chrome and you don't "pop it up, yo"? Let me guess... Bouncing it off the rev limiter while entering the "pose" and then doing a brake-stand burnout when leaving, is more your thing?

i like this forum a lot, but ive never understood the "no talk of stunting" rule. I know the majority of the people on here are track riders but stunting is part of motorcycling. as long as it stays out of group rides I dont see the problem, however i'm also new here

Sorry but it is just like "Fight club" You do know the first rule don't you?

And as for the racers... they do the stupid shit in a controlled environment. Unlike MANY "stunters".

NESR is predominantly anti squid.

i wouldnt call stunters squids, thats a bit of a broad generalization. wheelies on the highway in tshirts and shorts with cars around, thats obviously pretty squidly. On a backroad with no traffic and wearing gear doesnt bother me much at all, neither do the parking lot kids as long as there arent people around that may get hurt.

to me its all about the time and place and how you protect yourself. a lot of the guys out there that call people squids for their lack of gear need to take a look at themselves sometimes, ive seen a lot of guys here show up for rides and meets in tshirts and jeans. Im not saying everyone, and I'm not saying I have a problem with it, but stunting alone does not = squid

only drawback is you might need new clutch soon.

Re: so... how do you wheelie?

well chrome bikes is nothing more than a preference to mod bikes, just like extended swing arms, powder coating, or having a 184hp bike that will never reach near it's potentials.

I would just have expected a little less ball busting from a fellow GSX-R owner that i've heard is such a great guy in person.

A Squid is a motorcycle rider who, experienced or not, rides outside his abilities and sets poor examples by attire, propriety, and general behavior on the motorcycle

My wife brought up a good point tonight regarding gear. She saw a grouop of sportbike riders going into the store ahead of her. They had gear on. "You could just tell they were more mature and responsible".

Perception is half of what makes someone a squid. The other half is Action.

Re: so... how do you wheelie?

doc what year was that picture taken?

and jim, quit making up rules.

wheelies at NEU are friggin suicide. the mass ave bridge into cambridge is fair game though... and huntington ave right in front of the NEU gym every once and a while.....

and bouncing it off the rev limiter coming down mass ave past newbury is ok too. pulling up to all the bikes and bouncing it is lame though. there's a very fine line.

damn squids.

Re: so... how do you wheelie?

Another good one..

A motorcycle rider who demonstrates a lack of respect for the general public and the failure to realize the possible negative impact that could result from their riding actions on public or non-public roads.

The squid is just unable to rationalize or conceptualize the possible negative outcomes resulting from their actions. This is regardless of whether or not they wear protective gear.

The squid does not realize that it is not that they are not wearing gear that makes them a squid - it is the fact that they think they are exempt from social morales and can pull a 10 o`clock wheelie on public roads or weave in and out of traffic at twice the traffic speed just because they can.

Agreed, and this is why I usually will not call someone a squid based on their choice of gear unless it includes sandals or shorts because thats just funny. Also I dont call stunters squids for stunting, I call them squids when they do it in traffic, or on the highway in shorts and sandals

agreed here as well, but you cant generalize that as something that only stunters do, or something that all stunters do. Thats a squid thing to do, and not all stunters are squids

Riding a Hypermotard thru SF today, wheelies thru intersections, jumping down the insane hills, splittin' lanes and takin' names, sliding to stops at all the lights.

Awesome.
