Dampah Mount! So, I got a good deal on a Scotts Steering damper (Thanks Tony). Didn't come with any of the mounting "stuff" so I decided to fab some up... Here's the patient: ![]() The triples have adjustable bars and you need to keep the damper centered on the steering tube. I didn't want to lose the adjustability of the bars by locking the damper into one position, so I made a part out of some 7075 that would allow the damper to slide back and forth depending on bar position (you can just barely see the grooves that allow it to slide in the pic. There are a pair of nuts (deeeeeeeez nuuuuts) on the underside that slide with the bolts when the damper needs to move. I love working with 7075. Great stuff. This is some "Fortal" I scored on fleabay for cheap. I wish I had bought more: I didn't want to weld anything to my frame unless I had to... I also didn't have a big chunk of steel I could have bored a 2.5" hole in, so I machined a clamp out of 6061 to go around the head tube and kept the tolerance for the hole really tight... when you torque the bolts down it's pretty solid. I sat on it and jammed the bars back and forth with everything I had and couldn't get it to loosen up. I think it'll be good to go: ![]() Behind the number plate: ![]() ![]() |

Re: Dampah Mount! Thanks guys. James, whenever you want to swing by, man... I'll make sure you leave with all of my bad habits ![]() Yeah, I've been building this shop for about 3 years now. I used a Mill, Lathe and TIG welder... If you shop around you can do a lot better than $3K for a mill. It's all about right place, right time. (ask Kates about that big lathe he has I found mine at a shop that had gone out of business and they needed to get rid of their machines FAST (lease was up in a few days). I got the mill, the Wilton mill vise, a Heidenhain DRO, Powerfeed on the X axis, a big J-Bar, a small import bandsaw, a parts cleaner, and a TON of aluminum stock for $2500. The Mill is in decent shape... some marks in the table, but nothing big. Spindle is tight and runout was in the .000 range. It's a 1984 year which is pretty new for a used mill. Much of the stuff I was looking at was built around 1960. I had hoped to find something nicer, but this deal was too good to pass up. I could conceivably use the mill for 5 years and sell it for what I paid for the whole lot of stuff. I added a VFD to get the three-phase power I needed and got variable speed in the process. ![]() This is what the place looked like when I bought the house (that was kind of a "going out of business" sale as well ![]() Last edited by Tricky Mike : 06-29-08 at 08:07 AM. |

Re: Dampah Mount!Your fabricating work makes my pants tight. ![]() Hell I got a cordless drill/sawzall, an old door on some tires, a BFH, and a shitty craftsman buzz box that feeds wire speratic at best, with an assortment of steel stock. And that's what makes my halfass fab shop ![]() |
