no insurance + no registration

so I haven't exactly registered or insured my bike yet because it wasn't rideable. well now it is and I wanna take it for a little spin. if i got pulled over how do you think the cops would feel about it if i explained I just fixed it up and wanted to just take it for a little test ride all the while being polite and courteous to the officer.
is this a criminal offense?
or just a moving violation

im not talking like on the HW or anything, just a quick jaunt around the neighborhood

Not worth the risk. Chances are you'll end up having the bike towed.

Most officers would write for a very long time. Is it worth the risk on your driving record? What if you did get in a accident, care to list what you might lose with no insurance? House, etc..

Re: no insurance + no registration

all i really own of value is my bike. so all i have to lose is the SV more money i dont have and possibly my freedom. I have a case that was continued w/o a finding. so if i do get caught, that can be tacked on to the charges aswell.

ok so on that note..anyone wanna lend me oh say $600 for insurance and registration?

c'mon this godd@mn bike is calling me to ride it

Re: no insurance + no registration

dude, it is the end of the season! why not just hang it up and start saving the money to get the proper documents. even if you don't own shit if you get into an accident they can garnish all future wages ensuring you don't own shit for a long time. this is also against the law so you have the leagal system to deal with. if you take it out you are an idot who knew the risk and if anything happens i think most people would have a hard time feeling sorry for you. BTW the cop will ABSOLUTELY write you up and show 0 compassion. you will get in trouble and it will be big. you don't have $600 but you are willing to pay the $200+ it will take to get your bike back after the cop impounds it? this is a very stupid proposition

Relax man, it's not worth riding it until you're insured and have all the paperwork. Too many (VERY EXPENSIVE) "what ifs"

Getting caught driving without insurance and registration will get you a day in court, and not magistrate court I mean real court.

Re: no insurance + no registration

yup, back when I had my old gsxr750, I was at a light on rte 20 in waltham just minding my own business and a state cop pulled up next to me and told em to pull over when it turned green. I didn't have an inspection sticker on the bike and long story short, he wouldn't let me go anywhere and had the bike towed. Luckily I ended up taking care of it all in court

same thing happened to me. registration sticker had expired and the cop took the bike on the spot. cost me 20 for the sticker and 200 for the tow. all in all it was in impound for 90mins! imagine if i had to leave it there untill i had the money at $20+ a day!!!

ya man I know what you mean...I went and picked up my bike an hour later or something and I think the tow was $130 and the tow lot was honestly like 2-3 miles away.

Not worth the risk.
They are watching bikes all the time.
Not to mention if an uder insurred driver from N.H. ran a light and hit you, you would have no medical insurance.
Health insurance companies are looking for excuses not to pay these days.

I agree with pretty much everyone on this thread. Trust me when I say , the best thing you can do for yourself is put the bike away for the season and wait until everything is ready to go. Just cover the bike and concentrate on something else... Trust me, you don't want to take the bike out.

I dunno in my neighborhood I'd do it I take my trackbike down the block all the time if I wanna know if something is right. Then again I live on a rural dead end where no one is gonna bother me. Depends on your neighborhood.

Re: no insurance + no registration

my driveways is decent size. L shaped, 35-40ft from the street to the back where it hooks left to a 10'x20' spot.problem is, two houses share the driveway/lot so there are always cars. Ive tried it and putting around the driveway made me feel like a little kid learnign to ride a bike hahah.

Re: no insurance + no registration

here goes...

driving without insurance:
90/34J provides a 60 day suspension of license, plus the greater of $500 or the price of one year's compulsory insurance at the highest rated territory and risk class. basically, you'll be fined the entire year's insurance policy - and you still won't have an insured bike.

driving without registration:
90/9 provides for up to $100 fine for driving an unregistered vehicle on a public way.

driving without inspection (no number plate on bike = no inspection sticker):
90/20 provides for a $50 fine for driving without a valid inspection sticker.

on top of all this, add the points on your insurance, the tow fees, the fact that they might make your life difficult and not let you pick up the bike without proving insurance/registration if they impound it rather than just tow (at $20+/day)...

so yeah, i'd suggest riding it real hard...or not at all.

I got my ride impounded for no reg. earlier this year. $475 to get it back. Do you want to ride the bike $475 worth?

Your call...
