any idea on insurance costs?

can any give me a ballpark figure of how much insurance would cost me a year if i got like an sv650, i'm 16. just wanna figure out how much money i'm gonna need. by the time i get my bike i'll probably be 17, but i don't think that will matter at all...by the way, i live in mass, so no progressive or geico

Currently I only pay something like 75 bucks per month for my LS650 , because I have some special package cause me , my dad, and my uncle's 2 bike are all with one company. Motorcycle insurance doesn't cost that much compared to a car , you should call up a insurance company and ask for a quote , it's different for everyone. I think they also profile you by gender , age , and criminal record. If you have a clean criminal record it should be ok , so I'm thinking maybe 100-175 dollars per month depending on everything about you , including your driving record too I think . . .

I payed around $800 last year with full coverage with MSF course. I was 31 last year, so I would guess it might be close to double that.

I really dont know how much it will cost. But you are under 25 so you get screwed there, less than 6 years driving exp. screwed again. It all ads up quick..

because of your age you'll have a higher rate than most. there is absolutely no way around that - it's life. if you take the msf class and pass it you will get a completion card that is worth a 10% discount on your insurance (but trust me when I say this...it doesn't help THAT much). To top all of that off... it won't matter what company you go with either. The only thing that will matter is where you live and the insurance rate for that area.
They will factor in your area of residence, driving history (of which you have none - that could for your benefit or not? ), what year, make, model vehicle you are trying to insure, etc.

There is a lot to consider before getting into all of this - you need to sit down and figure out how much you can really afford. Do you really need a new bike? You can find an older bike that is still in good shape for much less than what you're probably looking at right now. You will also be able to pay more for insurance and gear than you would have if you were to get a newer bike... the other plus to that is that youre insurance cost would likely be much less than a newer model bike.

To touch upon with Ed said ... it's basically what I said above... your age is a huge factor. I will just be hitting my six year mark this fall - which in turn I will be getting a huge break in my insurance.

Don't get into accidents either! not to worry you any with that BUT being under the 6 yr mark accidents will hurt you more than later on your insurance.

The state of MA also has a basic rate that all of the insurance companys use so the diff between insurance companys wont be much diff. That is one of the reasons that companys like Progressive and Geico dont do business in MA.

My sugjestion is to find an insurance agent in your area that you can go see in person if there is ever a problem, things tend to get done alot quicker when you see them face to face. You can also tell them your situation and they can give you a better idea of what you might expect to be paying, they will help you out hopeing you will be a future client

My 2 cents

amica is what josh has been using - i was with some other company when i was in easton... amica's rate was a good amount less than mine so I'll be switching soon enough. The downfall is what Ed mentioned in the 2nd half... my ins. co. had an office right down the street from me and I grew up knowing these people as they went to my church... I'll now have to travel farther if I want to speak to someone in person. Keep in mind the bigger companies will have lots of people available to talk to you or you can go online for answers to questions.

Being below the six year mark you cannot get a quote online - but they will be happy to give you a quote over the phone and most companies are extremely helpful.

Dude, it shouldn't be anywhere near that high. I just got my 01 SV650S insured.

I'm a step 12 with an MSF course discount. Liability with pretty high limits totalled about $180, Comprehensive was like $300 (I live in Charlestown - if you live in suburbia that'll be a lot less), and collision was like $250.

It's actually a little less than those numbers - the total came out to just under $700/yr.

It really shouldn't be anywhere near 2k.

For you to have a Step 12 in Massachusetts you can't be anywhere near 16 years old. You start at step 16 and and have to work your way down don't you?

So his will be a lot more than yours. I'm pretty sure I'm step 16 (yah tickets) and mine is $1000 for an 01 SV assuming I ride right through the winter... about the same as what you're paying realistically cause I can get some $$ back if I don't ride in the winter. (I'm 25)

If he goes out and buys an 03 R6 or whatever other bike is in the super-high risk category as a 16 year old he could end up with a $2000 premium. (Maybe he'd have to live right in the city to get that rate too though)

Yes... with a $500 deductible.

I just got my policy updated for Waltham last week and it went up.

If you live out in the suburbs it could save you a bundle on the theft portion.
