Shortening a chain

How do I shorten a 110 link chain down to 106?

Besides take out four links, is there a special tool to cut the chain and put back that "master link?"

Unless you use the typcal master link with the little spring clip you will need a chain tool to re rivit the chain back together after you have shortened the chain. The chain can be cut with a grinder or the same chain tool can be used to break the rivit and shortn the chain.

yeah, get a wizzer wheel or table grinder. Grind down the chain (flat plate part of the link) and pull it off. Buy a dirtbike style master link with the C clip. Make sure you put the clip on correctly. The open end should face the rear of the bike... or opposite the chain drive direction.

Lata,
bri

PS. I've had the dirtbike style (C clip) master links for years and never had a problem.

http://www.streetandcomp.com/ They sell the tool and you will have it the next day. Ask for Dan Ex202. Use the pressed link as the clip ones fall off.

Be sure you're adjusters can accomodate taking that many links out. You're decreasing wheelbase and may be pulling that wheel forward too far. Also, I have lost clips from clip style chains.....get a rivet for piece of mind.

My axel couldn't be farther back.
The adjuster sticker said replace chain two marks ago.
I figure it'll pan out, not sure about the number of links I have to loose because its the first time I've done it on this bike.
SOunds like rivets the way to go. Its an 1100xx so i figure loosing the "C" clip would probably F me big time.
Thanks for the advice

You can only cut the chain in sets of 2 links so keep that in mind when cutting.
If you use the clip type, be sure to put the clip on the rite way and you'll be ok, i've never lost a properly installed clip yet in the 15 years i been off road riding.
