Ohh Dude.... Sorry this is so late. I just got back from the races.

I don't know what the heck happened I just know I have explained EVERYTHING to you about 30 times now and you still don't remember shit! LOL.
I'll type it up so you can read it.
You come walking into the pits as I am working on my bike, I'm like "Hey Dude wheres your bike? Don't tell me you crashed?" and you were all "I don't know I am kinda in shock"
So I have you sit down, give you a drink and put a fan on ya. Your leathers had some tar on em all up the right side but no rips, I figured the adrenaline was still pumping but you were gonna come down from it soon.
I ask where did you crash? you say "I don't know" I figure you just don't know the track well, thought you tucked it coming out of 12. A few more minutes of "I don't know's" and a quick pulse check and I decide you might need a little oxygen and a once over to calm your nerves.
We walk over to the infirmary and no one is in there. I sit you down and get your top half outta your leathers, look for obvious broken bones and see none. I go get one of the EMT's outta the ambulance and she comes in and puts you on some oxygen while I go get your helmet. The helmet just has scratches from what I can see. Go back to the infirmary and chat you up a bit. Tell you your bike looks fine and you need to get back out there. I needed to get back out for my session so I go to leave. I hear the EMT ask you if you know where you are and you don't answer! I was like oh jeesh he must have hit his head pretty good, but there was no damage that I could see to the helmet.

The EMT's come by in a little bit to tell us your going to go get checked out, they grab your wallet and cell and give me your leathers. I tell them I will take care of your stuff and give you a call later. I figured you would be back at the end of the day.
You never show. The EMT's tell me you couldn't even remember how you got to the track!
Oxx and Kevin from laps helped me load up your stuff (sorry I just threw it all in the truck but damn man you had ALOT of shit!) That old army trailer was scary!
Had your truck parked out front and gave the keys to (Melinda...Melanie?) the EMT. Got the number for the Hospital and gave a call. Told them I was a Nurse/Medic and friend of yourrs and got some info on your condition, then talked to you.

I swear I told you all of this 3 times on the phone and you were like "So How's my bike?" "What happened" after each telling.

I say... "Hit the little call light and put a nurse on the phone" She comes on and I explain to her that you are in no condition to remember shit, that I took care of your stuff and told her where it was, gave her my number so that your family could call me if they needed anything.

Your Dad called later that night and I spoke with him for a bit, then you called and asked AGAIN "What happened?" Told me you broke both collar bones and your shoulder blade.... Is that true? If it is they are minor breaks cause you looked fine in the infirmary when I did the exam.

I really think you just passed out at the handle bars in 3.

I hope it is all coming back to you now. I want to see the xrays!

hahah thanks for re-explaining it one last time Mike!

I do vaguely remember talking to you from the hospital bed. and I definitely remember you telling me to press the call button and put a nurse on the phone while I was being a dumbass.

but only because a blondie came in right afterwards to take care of me, so good call!

I know I brought a lot of sh*t! you laughed when I busted out the coordless drill but I DID need it didn't I?!?! Thanks again for getting it all together and taking care of my stuff you guys. I'll make it up to you definitely, but how about under different circumstances, ok?

I do remember Melanie. I think she was the one still at the track holding onto my keys after midnight for me. She was awesome and was very concerned about my well-being. When she came to see me I was like "damn she looks familiar"

so yea apparently I broke some bones in my shoulder, but it sure doesnt feel like it. They're hairline fractures and will fuse together normally with some time. I've got a sling that I'm sort of half-using becasue I've still got a lot of good movement out of my shoulder. My foot is friggin huuuge and briused, but no breaks thankfully. the concussion was the scary part.

banging my head was so strange. Only becasue you said I was up walking around, talking to people, etc right after the crash. I sure as hell dont remember any of that. Apparently when I got to the hospital or in the ambulance, the extent of my injuries caught up to me and my brain shut down completely to heal or something. I'm told it was a level 3 concussion (I dont know what that means), and I was told while I was out, I was a 3 on the coma scale. 15 being all good & dandy; 0 being dead! I wasnt released from the ER until about midnight I think; so that's a good 10 or 11 hours of me talking jibberish.

my helmet was the HJC CL-14. cost me about $150, fit pretty well I thought, and was a total piece of crap. I hope anyone reading this with a "budget" helmet will learn from my example and get PERSONALLY FITTED for an arai, shoei, suomy, AGV, or something of the likes. a quality helmet should be your first priority.

+1

There's no piece of equipment more important than a good, quality helmet.
If you decide to skimp anywhere equipment wise, better it be somewhere else.

Glad you're OK Joel.

+1 I had been scoping the more quality helmets for a while but thought my HJC was DOT and Snell rated so I should be fine. After reading about this I said screw it and just got a Shoei Rf-1000 Friday. So thanks for the lesson kid! Hopefully see ya track side soon.

There is a reason that LRRS banned the cheap < $200 helmets from being used for racing (enter conspiracy theorists on that one ... darrell? )

My opinions on helmet selection have already been covered in a recent thread here.

There's no conspiracy. People want to believe that a properly fitted, quality helmet should be able to protect your head against a concussion or other serious injury in all but the most severe of impacts. Recognizing that this is just not the case would mean accepting the risk that we take out there even given the best, most expensive gear available. It's much easier to blame the helmet.

well I think ignorance was bliss.

now I banged my head in an HJC and there's no looking back.

I think the risk is simply overlooked by many. I've crashed too many times & gotten away unscathed I think. Now it's obvious to me, and I am able to tie it all the way back to what Keith Kode was talking about with his $10 (I think, it was a long time ago).

I know the best helmet wont make me invincible anywhere close to invincible.

If I'm going to play this game of cards I want the best hand possible. At least so I can worry about the things that matter; like not braking too late into turn 3 lol...

Having dealt with more than a few street crashes over the years, the world's best helmet will not save you every time. You could go spend $900 on a fancy Arai and still get a concussion or worse if circumstances are just right. What those really good helmets will do, however, is give you a better chance of walking away with a clear head. My 2 cents anyway.

Isn't that the point of getting the quality helmet?

HJC DOES make a good helmet in it's top of the line. I am sticking with Arai or AGV, they just fit my head better, are comfy and have less wind noise. Plus they meet all the ratings.

Join the revolution and start wearing ear plugs if noise is an issue for anyone. My Buell has just the right tone to make your mind go to mush after a while and since wearing ear plugs its a whole new ride experience.
