funny you say that about ear plugs. I never liked them because I felt sort of detached from the bike in a wierd way. Even my dark-smoked visor would give me that feeling. you know, the one I crashed in lol...

most of the time on the street I'd ride with the visor cracked to get more noise and air-flow in my helmet. & it's not like the HJC was great at muffling the sound or anything.

really? interesting....i feel the exact opposite, i feel a lot more in tune w/ the bike when i have the ear plugs in....all i can hear is my own breathing and the engine. wind noise is distracting.

goes back to the keith code $10 theory

Earplugs are worth SECONDS per lap for me.

Without them, I hear every little noise, shift too early, and in general feel like things are happening much faster.

I find that the earplugs take away the distractions caused by the sounds of high RPM's and engine noise and let me concentrate more on my riding.

And anything I can take away that I don't have to think about while I'm out there is a good thing.

Maybe she is listening to a Tony Robbins tape - "all is well, your a winner, you win...because you're a winner, be positive, you can't fail...."
or visualizing this

She claims the same things that we get out of earplugs... basically it drowns out the noise of her engine and other bikes.

I explained that earplugs do it better because you're not covering one noise with another.

She said she'll try it next trackday...

I've tried earplugs on the track and found them to be annoying, however I always have earphones on when I ride on the street and my ride isnt as enjoyable if I dont have them.

But I might give the earplugs another try on my next TD before I completely dismiss them.

I can't say I ever find earplugs annoying, but I sometimes use earphones on the street instead. In general, I'll do it on easy cruise type rides, or long highway stuff.

On the track though... it's way too distracting to have the music for me. It would be interesting to verify, but my guess is not one professional racer uses music. And if there was any chance of it making them faster, you know they would use it.

See I don't think music would be a distraction on the track, mind you I totally understand, support, abide by your reasons for not having them during your trackdays. I use it as a motivator when riding (relaxed or aggressive), I'm not concentrating on the soreness and such.

Yeah... same girl.

As for using them, I just really feel they have no place on the track, assuming your goal is to actually get better and lower your lap times.

The amount of concentration needed to ride effectively is too great.

If you are truly concentrating on all the things you need to ride quickly at the track... you won't be worrying about soreness and such either.

I do understand how music can motivate people and psych them up PRIOR to performing a difficult task... but once the task is at hand, every athlete or other professional will do so without the music. (or the very vast majority, as far as I am aware).

i absolutely agree - i said something to her that she shouldnt be riding with them and if she gets caught she'd probably catch some heat- she just looked at me and didnt respond - i figured hey if she crashes she wont know wtf to do if a cornerworker is giving her instructions because she couldnt hear me on hot pit with our engines off- i look at it more of a safety issue as opposed to the concentration aspect - either way its dumb and shouldnt be on the track, but hey what do i know, i was only lapping her twice a session so she must have been really flying around the track with the music on <and yes i just bragged about passing a girl>

Yeah, the safety end was my reason for not having them.

It's probably not a big deal, but figured why add an unnecessary risk? Oh well... onto more important topics.
