i think it sucks. all i know is i can do both just like chow gum and walk the same time. i know some people cant do both.

btw: most people can't drive, so there even more dangerous with a cell phone

much to my surprise, I'm in favor of this.

I know I'm a better driver than the majority of yahoos out there (scoff if you will... ).

and I know I can "multi-task" way-y-y better than most folk. the last several years I was in the AF, I was a maintenance operations coordinator... which means that I was frequently talking on a radio AND a phone AND to someone beside me while monitoring a computer, the flightline outside my window, and updates on the status of a half-dozen planes at once. can't get much more intense on-the-job training than that...

(NOT something everybody can do, believe me-- hadda fire plenty of volunteers for the job when I ran the place. )

and I know for a fact that I drive better when on the phone than most of the idiots I see around me...

...but I also know that-- when on the phone-- my situational awareness drops by a boatload. once I got past the "oh, I'm too good at this to worry about whether I do or not", I realized that I am less safe when I've got a cell plastered to the side of my head... so I don't do it anymore, 'cept in low-traffic, low-speed situations, and then only for a few seconds at a time.

and if-- w/ all my training and attention-- I'm less safe out there, the average Joe has gotta be a frickin' menace. since I see cold, hard evidence of this every day on the road... I'm for the ban.

I knew it was just a matter of time before they tried to pass this. NY has had this law for quite some time. I'm sure headsets don't cost much so no big deal.

sportbikes are dangerous and not everyone can ride safe. but they cant ban. can they? headset will not help much if you cant chow gum and walk in the first place.

You can thank all the idiots that either caused accidents or crappy traffic situations for that. You can thank the chick in the SUV holding up traffic while talking on the phone (yeah, it's true, I've seen FAR more women distracted on the cell phone than men).

I rarely talk on the phone while driving anyway, but when I do, I really doubt I'm going to take that extra effort to plug in the ear piece for a 1-2 min. call....

sadly, studies have proven that even talking on a hands-free phone reduces situational awareness by almost as much as holding the phone.
