Question

AMA association?

Is any of you a member of the AMA? Is it worth it to join? What advantages does the membership gives you? Do they have towing if you get stucked somewhere? Do they have a discussion forum when you join as a member (haven't seen one when logging on their site) or do they have local sportbikes groups in different cities?

well, it cost money. And if it doesn't benefit me in some way I'd like, I don't see why I should join. There's a bunch of other things I can think of where I *should* put my money in before joining on this....

V, for a mere $39.00 for standard membership gets you 10% discount on motorcycle parts such as gloves, leathers, helmets, etc.... at participating dealers. The AMA also fights for your rights to ride and is there helping keep those rights which many people nowadays are trying to take away. Also if you add the Motow option to your membership you'll have peace of mind should you ever break down, be it running out of gas or if you break down along the road somewhere. This also works for your husband's bike if he should be with you and he braks downor runs out of gas.

Another benefit is 10% discount on stays at Red Roof Inns.

There are so many more reasons so just click on this link and read
AMA Member benefits

well, I guess it answer my question then. Not worth for me to join right now. 10% is not much, and with the $39 to join, it's more I'd pay than what I'd save, because I never buy motorcycle parts/gear. Meaning, I'm already equipped with gear, and I don't intend doing any mods on my bike, it's basically just sitting in the garage anyway. Maybe when I earn a stable income and be debt free...thanks for the info.

The AMA is not worth explaining to people.

If you don't get it, you don't get it.

Kham, you have a ZX10. If the AMA did not exist, I guarantee that you would not be able to buy that bike in this country.

The difference between being an AMA member and not being one is the difference between being a motorcyclist and being someone who happens to own a bike.

Which exactly why you SHOULDN'T support the AMA. Supporting the AMA is supporting SQUIDS. It's because of them 16 year olds with no experience can buy 10R's and such. Maybe bikes should be regulated. All that HP is nonsense anyway. REAL riders work twisties, and all you need is a 250, anything above that is utterly useless and a danger to us all. Think of all the mothers with children that have been taken from them because they couldn't handle a new bike with 1989348908409380 HP....

Heck, might was well have nonsmokers buy cigarettes just to support the rights of smokers!

j/k, it's a good cause!

On the flip-side, John Ulrich ran several eye opening pieces about how the AMA does business and is actually run. In many respects, it remined me of the Mass Turnpike Authority.

They are looking out for the AMA first, and the people they are supposed to represent second.

The latest bone-headed move was to actually charge the racers to get into the National. Yes - Matt Mladin and DuHamel would have to PAY to put on the show that people PAY to see. Could you ever see NASCAR doing that to Dale Jr? There would be a friggin' riot.

How the AMA has run National level racing for years has, IMO, led to its stagnation. It has not grown by any sence of the imagination and now with these class rules who knows what is racing what and what the difference between them?

I belong to the AMA, but I grit my teeth when I write that check. A member since 1988, and I often wonder why.

Here's another group that hasn't lost sight of why they lobby for us - http://www.mrf.org/

But me as a Privateer has to pay to race? I think your fucking stupid, there sponsors pay anyways! Give me a break, $100 entrance fee? Also they have to pay for there # every year for every class! I dont know why you people think they should be higher than god, and I would have to pay!

They all should pay, AMA is not always a great organiazation, but it is better than the nothing we would have otherwise.
As far as the restrictions, we would see tons more if not for the AMA, and me for 1 dont want to see that happen. As they say only the strong/smart survive. Its naturaul selection.

geez joe!! when i first read your post (before i got to the bottom), i was thinking to myself, wow, this is the most cogent and logical post that i have ever seen mystery squid post. i was wondering what came over you...

i just got back yesterday from attending the memorial services of a rider down the street from me. he was 25, bought a GSXR 1000, probably didn't know what he was doing, tried to do a wheelie in traffic, came down hard, went into a tank slapper, crashed, and died. this was last weekend.

in the UK, riders are required to hold a license for at least 2 years before they're allowed to buy anything bigger than a 450cc (or something like that, i can't remember). i think that is a good regulation.

ok that was a little off topic... what's AMA again? never heard of them, are they some sort of racing association?

Do you charge the actors to perform on Broadway? A show is a show.

What's the difference?

And the AMA isn't everything, and most certainly hasn't always looked for the average rider. RRW proved that. I'll stick to my Mass Turnpike analogy.

Locally, I think the MMA has done more for riders rights in this region that the AMA has done nationally lately.

Handicap plates for riders, bike's included in multi-vehicle discounts, getting the states to prove just where all the money we pay into rider ed. really goes. These issues mean something.

What has the AMA done except raise my dues each year or two?

And what has the AMA done to expand and promote road racing? We keep hearing about how it must be done like NASCAR, but each year they grow while we try to understand what Superbike, Superstock, Supersport, FX and whatever else is supposed to mean. 125's are bigger than ever, but you wouldn't know it at a National.

How many factory bikes on on a Superbike grid now? Six? Seven? And this is the Prime Time Series, right?
