Any way to track a threatening e-mail?

Friend of a friend is getting some nasty, personally threatening shit sent to her from someone who knows her. He's naming local places, and events she's been at. She's a real estate broker and is terrified of showing houses to single males now.

I have all headers of the email, the account is a quickie hotmail jobbie. IP address confirms this fuck is local, and a Comcast customer. I highly doubt any of the headers are forged.

Do I have any options here? I know Comcast uses dynamic IPs but mine's been the same at home for a year.

Send all the information you have to the police. Normal honest users don't have the access that they do. Good luck...

Let the "MAN" take care of it! When they find out who it is and what has been done, they can help determine what cause of action should be set forward..
A restraining order & or charged with harrassment.

I don't know the details, but thats the best thing to do.

Now, if you found out who it was a good Beat down would feel great, but not the thing to do, because you yourself could end up in trouble... Let it be in the hands of the Law!

Good luck.

Mike

Give the police printouts of the e-mails with the IP addy.

Threats over e-mail = felony stalking charge.

After going to the police, she should also speak to her manager at the real estate office to notify them that she is receiving these messages. The RE community has had real issues lately with this type of thing happening and they might have a police taskforce already working on it.

There are a few directions to go with this, but pending on the proactivity of the PD in the area - that is the place #1 to start (after notifying her manager because he/she will likely be engaged in this as well by law enforcement should results emerge with haste).

The average PD doesen't have the resources necessary to handle it, but they do know how to ring up the geeks @ comcast and have them check who had what and when. As long as there is a date and timestamp on the emails and an ip - they can tell if it's faux or not and can associate MAC addresses on their records with said IP at said time. Providing they are keeping syslogs and backups of em - this should be a 12 minute task for the right guy at the service provider.

Judging by the fact that the headers you say appear to be local and comcast based - It's doubtful this is someone with a speciality or interest in spoofing that sorta thing and thus it should be easy to catch them provided your friend reports this *immediately*.

Good luck, I hope they find the offender.

Has your friend considered some self defense courses and/or carry permit for pepper spray or a stronger equivalent if she doesen't already?

Yep, call the police AND Comcast. Demand the police tell you the case number and detective assigned and call him up and tell him/her that you will be calling daily for an update. The sqeaky wheel gets the grease.

Please let us know how it pans out.

By the way, threatening email IS a felony. Aggravated stalking?
