KatrinaI have a part time job at FedEx here in Manch at the airport. Last night we sent 1500 gallons of spring water, 2-3000 sm. teddy bears to the red cross, I personally loaded 600 lbs of nails, and other assorted hardware. I know we sent medical supplies I just dunno how much of what. We typically have 2 planes in and out of Manch every day, 1 in the morning, 1 at night. We were told last night to expect 3-4 planes for a while and possibly 2 planes at night instead of just 1. I'm sure as the weeks go on we will see more and more supplies sent. God Bless those in need down south right now. |

KatrinaI have an idea! Lets build a city below sea level right on the coast where tropical storms and hurricanes are expected to hit every 5 to 10 years with the strength to destroy the city! Seriously now. DON'T REBUILD. MOVE. Nature WILL always win one way or the other. The city was built before there was enough science to realize exactly what they were doing. It's horrible that people died. It's even worse that this was expected and was one of those "It's just a matter of time". Well, the time has come, now learn from it. The hurricane didn't kill those people, the city did. |

KatrinaI agree....they should move if mother nature is gonna destroy it again at some point... I feel bad for them tho, it's horrible what's happening. All those families with no more homes, belongings and souvenirs...gone. If I had to leave my house I'd make sure to take at least the pictures, and my kids favorite stuffed animal.. ![]() |

KatrinaThe problem was that Katrina kinda snuck up on everyone. It wasn't a hurricane until it was nearly on top of Florida. Two days of warning wasn't enough to get everyone out of New Orleans. The worst part is many of the deaths are the poor in the city who couldn't afford a car to evacuate or to just up and leave. |

KatrinaWhat I don't get is the insurance companies will pay out and the people will move back in again. Same thing with the people who live along the Mississippi river and get flooded out over and over again. People living in New Orleans are more easily forgiven but if you move right next to a river that floods every year and build your house 2ft above the river level something is fishy. It is just like riding without gear & helmet, all these people have accepted a huge level of risk. You'd think after they get burned once they'd take the insurance money and try to move. The other thing I don't quite get is that Boston is built right along the water too, for some reason we (Back in the 1700s and 1800s) were smart enough to fill the land as the city grew to make sure it stayed above sea level. Hence no need for dikes/dams/levees to keep the water out. Boston must be one of the dumbest cities around in terms of planning yet even we were able to get this right. There are a bunch of other cities like New Orleans in the US. I could have sworn I read Long Beach California is built like 10ft below sea level and will fill up with water if the dams broke. What happened in New Orleans will probably happen again somewhere else. |

KatrinaThe other crazy thing is that no one stepped in and stopped the oil companies from building 25% of the nations oil refining capacity in such a vulnerable location. |

KatrinaSomebody had to have known this was going to happen sooner or later... It justsad that they weren't more prepared and that people had to die. My thoughts are with those people still stuck down there.. |

KatrinaI read a couple places that there is some small debate as to whether or not the city should even be saved, that it's a lost cause, a modern day Atlantis. Apparently the city has been sinking for quite some time and the Mississippi river would have destroyed the city a while ago if it wasn't for human intervention in rerouting the river. This was just a disaster waiting to happen. |

KatrinaWow. Up here in NH, in my little shell from the real world, I was under the impression that racism was dead (at least in the media). Guess it takes a disaster to bring out the truth.... ![]() |

KatrinaFEMA called the company I work for (nationwide RV dealership) Monday and made arrangements to buy 20 campers from every store in the corporation (that comes to 1,020 campers for 25.5 million dollars). We have been scurrying about trying to get them all ready as quickly as possible so they can get to where they are so desperately needed. Although we are getting a sense of pride for busting our rumps to get these things ready to go, its still an eerie feeling knowing that they are needed that badly because of this horrible storm. |
