E-bay bike selling story....(long)

I was just telling someone about selling bikes on e-bay, and I remembered this story. I though you guys might get a kick out of it.

I once put a 94 CBR1000 I had on e-bay. It had been mildly wrecked (some stupid bitch ran into me. ), butwas perfectly rideable, and was a good bike, and because I got a good insurance check out of the deal, I was selling it cheap. I had a Buy It Now price of $2750, and it got bought up quickly.

So the kid (he was 19) who buys it calls me on the phone. He sounded like he either did a lot of surfing, smoked a lot of weed, or maybe both. He said, "Yeah, man, I'm, like, from Utah and stuff".

I said, "Thats nice. When do I get paid?"

He replied, "Well, I'm getting on a Greyhound bus in two hours, dude. Its, like, 65 hours on the bus, and then I'll be in Burlington. Can you pick me up at the bus station?"

I was rather amazed that he wouold ride a bus for that long, but hey, to each their own.

Sure enough, 65 hours later, I picked him up in Burlington. He smelled like a toilet, and was carrying one of those hardcore hiking backpacks that started at his ass and went about a foot over his head. I was curious as to how he was going to ride a bike like that, but he had brought cash with him, so I was happy either way.

When we arrived at my house, I wheeled the bike out of the garage and gave him a basic tutorial - here's the light swich, this is the choke, etc.

Now, at the time, he was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and his elephant size backpack. He threw his leg over the bike, said thanks, and began to ride out of my driveway. "Hey", I shouted.

He looked at me, all puzzled.

I said, "You think maybe you should put on a helmet before you begin your cross country bike ride home?"

"Do you think thats a good idea?" he asked.

I told him that not only did I think it was a good idea, but Vermont has a helmet law, and he wouldn't make it far without one.

So, he dug into his friggin Rosie O'Donnell sized backpack for - seriously - 45 minutes, digging around, and eventually pulling out a 70's vintage, open face helmet.

I shook my head, but hey, it was a helmet.

So he stuffed the rest of his crap in his bag, and got back on the bike. AS he was just getting ready to leave again, I noticed something else that was amiss - the bike had no license plate. And he was leaving for UTAH.

So, I asked him "Hey, did you bring a license plate to ride that thing home with?"

"Do you think I need one?" He asked.

I explained that yes, when one is leaving on a cross country trip on an unregistered bike, putting a plate on it might be advisable.

Back into the fucking closet/backpack/thing. Another 45 minutes. Out comes a Utah bike plate that is expired, a little. As in it expired in 1982.

At this point, I just laughed, and said, "whatever."

His last request before leaving was that I take a picture of him leaving, and e-mail it to him. He e-mailed me back about 3 days later, from his house in Utah.

Thats my e-bay story. Sorry if it sucks.

If ever you get the chance, Mr. Highsider is an excellent companion with whom to travel cross country. Not only does he have a totally kickass truck which can pull 5 bikes with ease and economy, but also because he will regale you with countless stories of motorcycle antics and crazy Vermont farm owners who adopt bear cubs and sell antique German clocks during WWII and own several million dollars worth of Italian sportscars in their run-down vermont farmhouse.

It was a while ago, but I'll dig around and see if I can find the pic.

I still wonder how in the hell he sat on a bus for 65 hours, then rode a motorcycle home to Utah, which must be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1800 miles from Vermont, in three days. He must have done enough speedballs to kill an elephant.
