Congratulations, you may already be a weiner.

So the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has nominated me for a voluntary/mandatory Massachusetts Driver Retraining Program. I don't even know what that means. Maybe because I'm such an excellent driver they want me to sit in on the course to help them better design it. I got my 3rd notice in the mail on Saturday and it says that if I do not take said program that my license will be suspended as of 12/6/05. I have no idea what happened to the first two notices. The kicker is, I am not a resident of the Commonwealth nor have I been for the past 35 months. It lists my old MA driver's license number on the notice but it was addressed to my NH address. I am perplexed. Anyone know if they can suspend a license which I do not possess? Or if they can suspend my NH license? I just don't feel like going to Massachusetts for an all-day driving class on a Saturday. I am just trying to Live Free and/or Die, but Massachusetts doesn't want to let me go.

I can tell you that, based on how long it's taking me to get the title I applied for 5 months ago, if New Hampshire does decide to suspend your license they will get around to it sometime in the year 2056. By that time, all of us (at least, all who survived the great blender uprising of 2035) will be driving around in hovercrafts powered by ground beets, and robotic wives will be cheap and plentiful, rendering basically any reason to go outside at all completely moot. So I wouldn't worry about it. Continue living free, and please enjoy your stay in New Hampshire: Where we can't really be bothered to enforce the few laws we actually have.

I'm not sure how NH works but in MA if you get your right to operate suspended out of state, you'll have your license suspended in MA.

That said, I think your situation is a little more complex than that. I would at least call the registry and say "Dude, WTF?" since getting a ticket with a license is a lot less inconvenient than getting a ticket without your license.

You mean like... excise taxes?!?! Tell me more. Do you have confirmation that they would do this? Do you work for the bad guys? Did the penguin tell you to do this?

I had to go to one of those classes in fall river . what a joke, spend all day there talking about everyone tickets they have gotten ,and how we don't belong there. In the end after taking one of there so called (reeducational tests) they told me I was a bad driver because I liked to play "driving games". no joke!!

You can only get 'schooled' if you have a nasty habit of the greater then rules, AFAIK. If you have greater then 5 tixx in 5 years, or 3 in 1, or whatever those were....its all on the MaRMV site.
I do know however that its only for your right to operate in this state. I am assuming that you accrued all these tixx when you did live here and now they want to pay you a visit. Or someone has stolen your identity and is a horrible driver.

I've taken those courses too - avoid at all costs. You will emerge dumber if you fall for it.

I went to court to appeal 2 thats right 2 tickets in the same day. Just hopeing that one of them would get kicked out , as soon as the rep. saw my name twice I was done for. I went in a step 13 walked out a step 17, and had to get reeducated on the finer points on how to drive. what are the chances you get both tickets to apear on the same day. WHAT A BITCH.

No I don't work for the state. This is just paranoid thinking that everything comes back to taxes or fees when it comes to MA.

I almost got an arrest warrant & suspended license against me last year for the $100 excise tax on a motorcycle which I didn't even own anymore. They decided to send me an excise tax for my 2002 VFR in August 2004. I had sold the bike in February 2004. When I got my bill it said I was 2 months overdue already, except they never sent me the bill in June 2004 when I was supposed to pay it. When I sent in the paperwork they erased the tax and then a week later sent me a $100 fine for late payment on something I didn't have to pay in the first place.

Last night the clerk at EMS looked at me funny when I asked if there was a "using a gift certificate tax" as he hadn't charged me tax on a $50 shirt. I thought that was pretty sweet to get off with no tax. Turns out there is no tax on clothes in MA unless the piece of clothing is over $175, at which point you get charged a luxury tax. Typical MA.

Heh.. ditto what someone said about the driver course. I took it in NH voluntarily trying to get some points of my license. They never took the points off and the course was lame-o. Most likely everyone there will be a repeate offender DUI loser trying to get their license back so they can get another DUI.

Ohhhh, is that why they call it Taxachusetts?
Once you said that, it jarred my massive brain a little bit. I seem to recall a little matter of excise tax on my F4i that they wanted me to pay after I moved out of state and subsequently retired the bike. Perhaps 'the man' is trying to stick it to me after all. I'll put a call in to my liason.

OK, here's the story. When you switch to a NH licenece NH is lazy and never notifies MA. So even years after my MA license would have been expired, they still sent me letters that they were suspending it. You have to go to the NH DMV in concord and get a verification letter that says you have held a NH license since XX date. Then bring that to a MA RMV and meet with a hearings officer. I would recomend not going to lawrence unless you want to walk over dirtry needles, listen to 8 welfare children per family run around screaming, and leave smelling like a toilet. If you don't take care of this MA will suspend the license that you don't have, and NH will suspend the one they didin't inform ma about. Everytime you get a ticket or any change in your record you will go through this again and again they will tell you, 'it has all been sorted out now'.

I like your story. It sounds like a lot of work and time. Time is money. Who should I send the bill to?

It's not just time, but it's money too. $10 for the verification and a lot more than that in gas. they won't do a thing over the phone, NH won't mail anything out, and MA won't except mail or faxes. If you do mail or fax, they'll deny that they ever got it.
