So one of my managers calls me after hours on Friday...

He's flippin out, all nervous & shit... He just had an interview for a big promotion worth an extra 10-15k a year or somethin w/ the Director of Corporate Security for the company earlier that day & he just heard that the the guy has a flat tire. His car is over at one of the other buildings & he'll be in a meeting untill 11pm. He asks me (tells me ) to "manage the situation" and get it taken care of, blah blah blah. "Pete... you don't understand how expensive this tire is for me... this is basically a $10-15k a year tire"

"John, no problem, it's as good as done"

So I get one of the guards over to the building to take care of it & my manager is still callin me every 1/2 hour on the 1/2 hour, giving me 5 different numbers to reach him at if anything goes wrong... "John.... relax... it'll be FINE."

So the guard comes back, had some trouble gettin the old tire off, but it's all set, new one's on, peace is restored.

"Pete, you're the fukin best, I'll get you taken care of next week"

...... fast forward to Monday.

"So Pete... did you hear about the car?"
"Nope"
"Dude.... You're not gonna believe this... The tire got put on BACKWARDS... RUINED THE ROTOR, THE CALIPER, THE HUB, THE WHEEL WELL.... 600 BUCKS IN DAMAGE... YOU'RE FIRED, YOU'RE FIRED, YOU'RE FIRED, YOU'RE FIRED, YOU'RE FIRED"

at which point the guy that did the job comes over & says "Hey John, you gotta tell that guy to get a new tire iron, it was a pain to get off"....

OOPS!

Needless to say, he didn't ACTUALLY fire me or place any blame on me, but he did almost kill the guy that did the job. If I coulda done it myself i would have, but i can't leave my post.... and besides, he got the promotion anyway

Is it actually possible to put a tire on backwards?

I apologize in advance (I am mechanically declined)....

But what happened?

Doesn't a wheel only go on one way? Even if the tire was installed the opposite way that it should be moving on pavement, how does that damage the rotor, hub, caliper, etc.?

And what does this have to do with a tire-iron being tough to get off?

The wheel itself was completely backwards... meaning he put it on w/ the inside of the rim facing outwards. I have no idea how he managed it w/o noticing, but he did. I suppose of the offset of the rim is very low (meaning how deep it sits into the car when you set it on the hub) then it won't stick out terribly far when mounted backwards... but it should still be noticable

the part about the tire-iron was just kinda funny cuz it added insult to injury He didn't know he fuked up at that point & was complaining cuz the lugs were tough to break loose w/ the cheap tire iron

I dunno... i just thought it was a funny story my manager freakin out, me tellin him to chill, get it all taken care of but CAUSE 600 bucks in damage, then the guy that did the job complains cuz the lug nuts were tough to get off

How the heck did the big shot manager who your manager is asking you to take care of get that high up in the company and not be able to walk around his car and notice a rim is obviously on backwards? (Inside out?)

Was it a woman? Whoops did I say that?

That's why we weren't fired, it was "above & beyond" the call of duty. My manager wanted to brown nose so he asked us to take care of the higher-up. That's one of the reasons why were're the "golden account"... we go out of or way to do stuff like this for the client. I've helped people change a tire in this building before. The security officers here don't just sit around & do nothing, Alot of what we do is customer service so this isn't completely out of the ordinary. I've helped people FIND their cars, fix their cars, jump start their cars, call people cabs, get them directions, print out maps, blah blah blah, all that in addition to my normal security stuff that I do: alarm monitoring, elevator system monitoring, fire pannel monitoring, camera monitoring, daily log..... there's actually a ton of stuff we're responsible for here but the majority of it only takes a couple seconds to complete, that's why I'm online all the damn time

He was told his car was all set, he gets out of a meeting at 11pm on a Friday night, exhausted i'm sure, goes up to his car, approaches from the driver's side, the flat was on the passenger side, gets in, starts to drive & hears a grinding sound, stops, gets out, says ".... what.... the funk".

how's that for a run-on sentence for ya?
