Hitting the slopes?

So what types of riding do you like at the slopes?

If you vote, please explain your answer

I love the Glades/woods trails Nothing like ripping through the woods with the trees rushing by, plus there's not much other slopeside traffic in the woods. It also is the same sorta rush as trail riding on the quad or bike so I look at it as a winter "ride" fix

Hitting the slopes?

The wife and I both ski and have for years, we ski everything on the mountain, bumps to cruisers, steep, narrow to glades. We picked up some snow blades ( mini skis ) a couple years ago and took them to the glades which opened up a whole new world, you can cut in and out of the tightest stuff on those things. The skis are fun in the woods but these things are better.

You're probably right, I don't crank it as much as I used to when I was your age

Well then, use the 5th option for the park riders, I can't edit the pole

Mainly woods and moguls. Mad River when there is snow (the moguls are really close together), and Smugglers or Sugarbush when Mad River is really icy.

Since living out east, the skiing is sucky. Try Utah powder...that's heaven on earth!

Skiers from the East are generally better than 'out West' skiers.

Hitting the slopes?

Little bit of everything but I generally avoid the glades & terrain parks. (Love to watch in the terrain park though, and wouldn't mind getting out there with my camera this winter.)

I am good enough to negotiate the glades carefully, I am not good enough to do much in the terrain park.

However it is more about "controlled risk". I'll never forget watching a guy snap his femur the first time I went through the glades at Sunday River in HS or seeing people land head first in the terrain park. I am not motivated or fearless enough to learn that stuff really well.

It is also exceedingly funny that the ski areas are pushing glades & terrain parks these days when 10-15 years ago skiing in the woods or jumping would earn you a quick ticket off the mountain. Something bizarre happened with insurance or marketing or just the industry paying everyone off... These days the ski areas seem to compete on how extreme & dangerous of an experience they can offer you.

Deer Valley? Park City? Park West? etc?

I hit all of those when I was in SLC too.. great skiing... without a doubt the best skiing I've ever done.

Heavenly Valley Lake Tahoe was outrageous too... that tops my list for best scenery.

All over Colorado too, but I'd rather go back to Utah or Tahoe.

As for glades,wood, moguls, etc...

I prefer glades, back bowls etc... ungroomed virgin powder.

I'm too old to ski the woods/trees or moguls. When I was younger I spent the majority of my time there.

I think I'm going to try snowboarding this year... skiing has gotten kind of boring for me... I've been skiing for about 28 years.

coming from a patroller "snow blades" are not safe for your legs... I have seen more spiral fractures from those fuckers than anything... The bindings don't release.

Better off buying a short set of twin tip skis to have fun with.

Twin tips, that's what i've got... K2 Enemy's.... awesome all mountain ski that's good in the park as well, athough I can't exactly use em to their full potential... don't ski nearly as much as i used to. I'm lucky to get out 2 or 3 times a year

whoah, deja vu

I have a pair of Atomic GS:11s and love them, but they're definitely a purpose built ski meant for hammering out wide-radius carved turns on groomed runs. I've been skiing quite a bit with more flexible skiiers and am thinking about picking up a pair of mid-fats for the crud that we typically get up here after a snowstorm.

I love the hitting the glades and bowls. The glades here are pretty good when there is fresh snow...Jay peak has the best glades (IMHO) in the east. I have skiied out west several times and nothing beats it. I am glad I learned to ski the east, it makes it much easier out west. A few years ago I picked up some powder boards and those things rock the powder and crud. My other 2 pairs are good all mtn ski's that love ice.

Yeh but 15 years ago you could ski all day at a big mountain for about $30 bucks or so. The big mountains are getting $69 - $72 bucks for a day now. My guess is among other things a good portion of that goes to higher insurance premiums and lawyers.

I was in the same situation, I have a set of GS11s and they are an incredible ski for a very specific type of skiing on a specific type of terrain. I began to look for something with a smaller turning radius, that could handle powder, bumps, crud and still hold a decent edge on the typical new england icey hardpack.

I demoed Atomic SL11s, SX-9s and SX11s. The SL11 was polar opposite of the GS (duh), but equally a race specific ski. The SX9 was pretty decent, and the SX11 was a good ski, but heavy like the GS11. It turned quicker but like the GS it liked to be riding around on edge all day in an arc and was punishing in the bumps.

The ski that came out on top for me was the Vokl 724 EXP, it is an excellent all around performer. I demo'd those and the SX11 both here and in Tahoe, I threw the 724 down some very gnarly terrain including virgin backwoods, steep chutes and moguls the size of small cars. The shovel is soft enough that you can ski bumps, but the tail is stiffer than a dedicated bump ski. That helps it in other situations, and the ski cut is decent for powder. They're a workout if you want to get the most out of them, but compared to the GS11's they are very mild mannered and can be enjoyed when skiing at 60% vs. the GS11's which are more like an on/off switch to me.

I found a pair for $530 shipped with the matching Marker bindings on ebay this year, I have 4 days on them so far with no regrets. FYI the 724 series ski is now the AC series ski I believe, I'd demo a set of AC3s they seem to be similar sidecut and turn radius.

I like glades and POWDER. But pretending you're a dumbass on the green trails is occasionally fun.
When it comes to jumping i'm really not great, but I love to build kickers where people cant find them and there's lots of powder for a landing, thats alot of fun.

Hitting the slopes?

I used to ski quite a bit as a kid, but age, money, and injuries forced me to stop for a while. Now, it is mostly money that forces me off the slopes, but I do manage to get out once a year or so. I try to keep it easy as I don't ski often, so my legs aren't up for the challenge of avoiding trees really...
