Welding Questions - BodyworkSo here is the new toy(click on the pics for full size): ![]() ![]() It's basically the same on the other fenders. I have removed all the old bondo and fiberglass with a claw hammer last night. I have traced a rough outline of where I will be cutting the fenders with a 4" angle grinder equipped with a cutoff wheel. I don't need to return the fenders to their original size due to running larger tires in the near future, but I could put them back to stock without a complaint. I want to weld some new sheet metal on. The wheel wells could be round or squared off, whichever is easier. I'm thinking that 18 or 20 guage sheet metal stock is what I'll be getting for the project. I have access to a 200 amp 220v Lincoln arc welder. I've heard stick is NOT the way to do sheet metal, especially considering the sheet metal on the stock samurai is probably thinner than 18. I have been told MIG is the way to go. Opinions? Anyone have a MIG welder and want to teach me how to do this for free beer and food one weekend? It's been approx 5 years since I MIG welded last and I've forgotten quite a bit. I also have no MIG welder currently and would love to hear recommendations for purchasing a small one. I can use the stick welder for big stuff in the future like sliders and spring perches, I just need a wire-feed with sheilding gas for some sheet metal work. Thoughts? Edit: The garage I do my work in is equipped with a 220 outlet for the arc welder. |

Welding Questions - Bodyworki can weld all kinds of stuff, (read: heavy steel with mig or arc welder ) sheet metal is hard to do, takes the right touch, cause its so easy to burn through. once (maybe twice), just for fun, i turned the lincolc 220 vac arc welder way up high and touched it to some sheet metal... it disappeared in a big flash! that was cool. |

Welding Questions - BodyworkWe're cutting the rust off before doing any welding. Luckily enough the frame is completely rust free (shocking!) and the rust is only where you see it. I was going to just toss some fiberglass on there and call it a day, but I'd rather use this POS to get good at welding. We have a small wirefeed flux core style welder to use. If needs be we can buy the gas shielding kit for it for about $100. I was just hoping to get a little advice on what we should start with for amperage and wire style and size. I'm willing to screw up a bit as it doesn't matter too much, there isn't anything nice to start with. I haven't welding in a long time and have no idea where to start. |
