Mechanics - need thoughts on something

Looking at buying a car from a private sale. It's a student here. She has a 99 Hyundai Sonata with 120xxx miles on it. Talked to her and a couple of people that have driven it and some say it's electrical some mechanical, some major and some minor. I haven't driven it yet but I want some things to look for and some prelim thoughts.

Other than minor stuff (new taillights, oil change and tire rotation, etc) it has a problem - I guess when you accel there is some hesitation. It's being described as a couple of "jumps/skips". That's about all I know at this point. I know it's vague but any ideas? I am basically looking to know if it seems like a major problem (head gasket) or something minor?

Will - dont.

That car is junkyard fodder, dont waste your time. At best, it needs a bunch of crap, and will continue to be a shitbox Hyundai. At worst, its a shitbox Hyundai that will need a new head/valve job/motor.

They are worth next to nothing at high milage for a very good reason.

Find yourself a Honda or Toyota and call it a day.

Running rich? Bad o2 sensor?

Not worth the time of day. You could buy a brand new one for the cost of one of your guns.

You ride a bike.... thats a "stick" it is the same as shifting on a bike, switched the hand and foot job...

also the sputtering might be bad plugs, wires, distributer cap and the rotor inside, Head gasket would burn antifreze and lots of white smoke out the back, another way to check if it is head gasket is to run the car a couple mins then look at the oil, it will look like thick chocolate milk with bubbles (antifreeze mixed in) if it is a blown head.

Ok. I know the bike is a "stick" but I am better with hand eye coord than foot eye coord. On top of that I have never had the opportunity to learn how to drive a standard car. A buddy of mine was nice enough to let me try his bike but no one will let me try it on their car. My rents never had a stick car and I wasn't gonna go buy one only to destroy the clutch tryin to drive it. Wife has no interest in a standard car and this would be hers anyway - I'm keepin the Xterra for me .

So if you have a standard car that I will fit in and will teach me to drive it - I'm game.

That car will give you allot of headaches. It is a disposable car that has reached its limit.

this is true, but the good thing about disposable cars is that they are cheap to keep running, it will proabably need something all the time but that is up to you if youwant to deal with that. I bet brakes in the jeep would be way less than $200, also if you want you can come up to concord and i will let you try learning on my car (02 Sentra SE-R) if you will "fit in it" you are more than welcomed to.

When I move to Conc I may have to take you guys up on this. I kind of had an alterier motive here too. Wifey gets a new car, then the jeep becomes a strictly off road rig. No more bitchin from her end. I am not going to buy it, if I had 200 bucks to spare I would just to learn how to drive stick but I don't have the money to spare with moving. She wants a bike real bad too. We'll see what happens with car or bike. Car = practical but when have I ever made a practical decisionw hen toys are involved?

I owned a hyundai once. Three hours after I bought it, a tree fell on it while it was sitting in my driveway, totalling it.

Lesson: God hates Hyundais.
