dude is that rotor missing a side?! hitting the brakes at night must have been a nice spark show. little metal on metal contact.

new calipers, rotors, pads. wheel bearings, brake fluid and your allset. do the work yourself if you can.

Yeah - pad an inside of rotor is totally GONE.

Gonna try just doing the pads and rotors first and if need be - they have calipers in stock. Gonna give it a go tomorrow.

i have a good feeling your wheel bearings are fried. while you have it apart you should def change them out. i don't think there to much. you'll need a small bit of grease to pack the bearings first.

i've seen worse before to. i took off the wheel of this ladies car and the rotor fell off in three pieces.

btw if i didn't live so far away i'd come help. canada's a little far

Ive seen em separate before but I have never seen them with 1/2 missing. I had a car I was driving home to make a demo derby car out of split a rotor, But it had been sitting in the woods for about 10 years so I wasn't real surprised. By the way we got that car started on the 10 year old gas in the tank She smelled perty.

Why would he need new bearings and calipers?

you should replace or repack the bearings everytime you service your brakes. there's grease in there that wears out and disapates over time. if the brakes have been neglected for that long chances are there bad. also the tremendous heat generated from metal to metal contact will damage them. the calipers wear out to. they maybe fine and just need a cleaning. he does wheel that jeep so dirt and mud tend to wear things out ALOT faster. every case is different but never hurts to go right though it and replace/fix-it all at once imo.

oh and the brake fluid everywere is a good sign the caliper is worn, that or there's a bad line.

At about 150$ per side - the bearings will remain fucked if they are.....It's one unit and has to be done as the whole bearing and hub assem.

Haha, this reminds me of the time our mechanic at work came in in the morning and said his truck was making the worst noise, and every time he hit the brakes the truck would dive to the left. He pulled off his front right tire and the outer ring of the rotor had completely seperated from where it gets sandwiched onto the hub. LOL He pulled the tire off and the thing just fell on the ground off the hub.

As you can imagine, hes a really good mechanic.

Well. I will leave it at this for now: brakes now work fine, thanks to Chris' help. There was one minor mishap we'll say. Finally ready to take it for a test drive after 2 trips to the parts store and 4 hours (lots of rusty parts). Well we put the tires on and all and take it for a spin. I guess someone, who will remain nameless, got a little over zealous about the test drive and forgot to tighten the dirvers side pug nuts all the way. Use your imagination to think of what happened after a mile or so......

Hey - dont drive that thing the way it is until we figure out why the caliper bolts wont tighten.

We put new calipers, pads, and rotors on the front. Everything went fine (other than the aforementioned circus trick), except that the caliper bolts - the ones that bolt the caliper to the caliper cage - are so long that when fully tightened, they are up against the back of the brake pad, causing the wheel to lock up.

The calipers were rebuilt units, and the the only thing I can think of is that they are off a different year Jeep, and as such have a slightly different build. At the moment, the caliper bolts are finger tight, and not touching the pads; obviously its not a good idea to drive like that, lest they should back out and disappear completely.

I tried loosening the caliper bolts and stepping on the brakes, pushing the piston out further and thus giving more clearance for the bolts; this did nothing.

Will's Jeep hates me.

I am working on getting rid of it. I may be looking for a quad in the near future....yeah right.

If we get wifey a car and sell the jeep - I think that I have no choice but to lift the X.

I know of a Hyundai Accent that might be just right for you, needs a little work, but nothing a master mechanic like yourself couldnt handle.
