Windham Sheriff Sheila Prue resigns

BRATTLEBORO -- Embattled Windham County Windham County Sheriff Sheila Prue resigned Friday, the same day she appeared in court to answer criminal charges about the way she managed the department.
The two-sentence letter was delivered to Gov. James Douglas Friday afternoon.
“This letter shall serve as formal notice with regard to my letter of resignation,” she wrote.
“Said resignation shall become effective upon receipt of this letter to your office,” the letter said.
Prue was in court Friday afternoon in Brattleboro answering charges of embezzlement, petit larceny and neglect of duty.
A state audit this spring determined that Prue diverted funds and nearly bankrupted her department.
