Cool

First time going to a shooting range!

Going up to the Manchester, NH range in a couple weeks with some family peeps, any advice or anything for someone who's only pseudo-experience with guns is paintball guns? Or, should I keep an eye out for any guns in particular that are good for beginners? I'd like to get licensed (Mass) and purchase a handgun depending on how this goes.

Talk to the guy at the counter, tell him it's your first time. They're very knowledgeable.

Safety

Safety is Something that many neglect with firearms. #1 Always treat it like its loaded, whether its a pistol, a rifle/shotgun, or a bb gun. #2 NO MATTER WHAT ALWAYS point the Firearm down Range, I don't care if you get stung by a bee or a hot shell casing falls down your shirt,,, Keep the gun pointed down range. #3while out shooting, AT/To/From:If you are using a pistol like a glock/sig/ Berretta, keep the slide locked back when there isn't a magazine loaded. THat Is ALL, Have fun dude.

last time i was there was with Hesso, and we spent like 600 bucks.... and video taped most of it.

stay away from supressed weapons... they sound cool but resulting gases sucked

stay away from sniper rifles, they make you use and pay for pre fragmented cartridges, at something like $2.50 each

expect lots of jams... the guns are dogs

if the gun doesnt fire when you pull the trigger keep it pointed down range and give it a few seconds.

rent the shit you cant rent elsewhere... ie the full autos.. you can rent the otherstuff locally

Like they say, keep the safety on until ready to fire. Also, keep the weapon pointed down range. If you are in anyway intimidated or nervous then maybe you shouldn't do it. Firearms can be a ton of fun and you MUST RESPECT THEM but you CAN NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM. Fear causes accidents and injuries.

In the act of firing the weapon; once pointed down range turn the safety off, take up the slack in the trigger reaffirm your target and squeeze the trigger with a deliberate, single motion.

Grip: Your grip should be firm but not white knuckled. I prefer the push/pull method. Push your hand with the grip into your hand that doesnt. Pull back with your "empty" hand creating a cup to the front/bottom of the grip around your other hand. (ask the guys about this at the range.)

Recoil: The weapon will recoil. Don't try to fight it or anticipate it. once you have taken up the slack in the trigger and are at the threshold of the final squeeze, do just that, squeeze. Let the weapon recoil, if you let it do what its gonna do anyway then you can focus more on accuracy and not strain hand muscles.

Breathing: Prior to firing, (basically once you have done the steps above.) I like to exhale and at the end of the breath fire the round.

As for the auto stuff. Go wild, have fun but keep to the basic safety rules.

Take a firearms safety class at AG Guns on Rt 133 in Lowell. It's an all day class on Saturday or Sunday, and once you finish the class, you get a 10% discount off anything in the store.

It's a great class if your willing to learn, or you can take is at Bob's in Salisbury for $50 in about 2 hours. AG's cool but the prices are a good 10% higher to begin with, don't get me wrong I've bought a few pieces there myself and have always been happy, but the discount isn't anything special.

And if you just want to shoot for fun buy a decent shotgun and shoot trap, IMO it's ALOT more enjoyable that handguns. You can try it at the Andover Sportsmens club on Wed. and Thurs. nights or Sunday mornings.

This gun shooting thing sounds like fun. I should like to try it out one day myself.

Advice. Aim for center mass.
