Remote starter hekp

Anyone know how I can pull the remote starter out of a civic? what to look for. We bought a new car last night (VW Jetta) and I want the remote starter out of the Civic. We were planning on picking the car up tomorrow so i am pressed for time. i want to make sure i am getting all the parts out also, and i am not sure what is included in the package. i think it's an old Valet or Python model. i want tihe wiring to be ok when i yank it... obviously. It's tucked under the dash.

I am assuming you didn't install it yourself, then.

Any chance of the installer removing it for you?

You might be better off just getting a better system for the Jetta.

No specific experience... but if you pulled the panel on the underside of the driverside dash and look at the wiring harness going to the ignition, look to see if there is a harness plugged inbetween.

I know I've installed a few turbo timers (work very similar to a remote start in that they keep the car running but still acts like the car is shut off) and you can buy a harness that just plugs in between the ignition and the stock harness and just intercepts signals.

Ofcouse if it was done right you will need to pull off wiring that either goes to the e-brake or speed-o wire coming out of the ECU (you can clip these if you want, just leave enough to re-wire).

That should atleast give you a quick hit since you can pull that panel under the dash off in like 10 minutes, if you find a harness it can follow it to the "brain" of he remote starter and take it.

Worse case scenerio is they manually tapped wires.

Good luck with that. From what I understand it is a PITA to install a starter on the new VW. Most shops do not even want to touch them and if they do it usually costs 400-500 dollars. So unless you really know what you are doing you probably won't want to try and install it yourself.

As far as the uninstall goes, I have never pulled one out.

The expensive part of most remote starters is the labor , not the parts.

I've done this and been paid to, it is rarely worth it IME.

Yup, if it is a newer Jetta you can either expect to pay a ton to get someone to install a starter in it or just forget about doing it all together. VW does something weird with their electrical system that makes it a nightmare to get one to work properly.

As far as removing your starter from the other car goes. Go under the dash and find the module for the starter. Trace all the wires out to where they interface with the cars factory wiring. Disconnect them at those points and be sure to tape up any exposed wiring. If there are wires that were interrupted for the starter installation be sure to reconnect it as it will probably make the difference between your car running again when you are done or not running any more.

Good luck,

Joel

I'm thinking about just letting the thing go. We didn't pay for the thing, so it's no money out of our pocket. & I have no patience (nor time) to get in there and take it out cleanly.
