Is it really that surprising though? The guys probably had so many near misses it was just a matter of time.

Then again, you could probably say the same for riding.

So more power to him.

Kind of. The article I saw says that the stingray's barb actually poked a hole in his heart. So it wasn't really the sting, but the stinger.

A little of both - the venom in the stinger helped things go downhill.

Never got into the show, but it's oddly reassuring that he died doing what he loved. Ironic that it was something more docile like a stingray that did him in, instead of a giant saltwater crocodile or some kind of super-poisonous snake.

I must express my disgust with CNN for making this the biggest news topic of the day instead of something more... global. Then again, anything to hide the news of the day, right?

My kids are 10 and 5. They've been growing up watching his show.

Steve put himself in harms way to help us learn about those creatures. I can't say I am completely surprised at this happening, he seemed to take excessive risk in alot of his shows. However its a good part of what made the show so interesting, cuz it was hosted by a complete nut!

For me... Its almost like someone in my family died today. It's kind of strange to try to explain, but that is the closest I think i can describe it.

i hear you me too...it is really sad...

i dont think stingrays have venom though...maybe someone with some dive experience can explain(*ahem...mshap *cough*) i think he must have dropped down on a stingray...those barbs are only there to stop them from being crushed...so they stick them straight up in the air..they cannot attack with them...i heard on the news that there are only 7 reported stingray deaths...it is very unlikely to die from them...i mean you can pet them att eh aquiriam...its jsut crazy

There are many kinds of stingrays. Some are dangerous, others are not. We have rays here in Maine that can generate a 220 volt charge. You wouldn't want to pet those guys.

Yeah, for years we all watched this guy go pulling animals out of their burrows and dwellings with his shouting narrative, the whole thing peppered with crikey! and ain't she a beaut!, but not one took him out or even dissuaded him from carrying on. But his death came in the silence of the sea, and without any warning or provocation at all. Just odd.

Sucks though that he is gone

It's weird, I was just saying to myself how I haven't seen him on tv in a while and then bam, he's dead. I read that it might have stabbed him under his rib cage and poked a hole in his heart. Crikey!! Kind of ironic seeing as he love animals with all of his heart. I know I'll miss that crazy bastard. The best part of his show was listening to him talk and jump around.

Well, petting is one thing, getting stabbed in the heart inadvertently by its tail is another. I'd say petting is still ok.

oh yeah how could I forget; this is the guy that got is name trying to french kiss cobra snakes and by sticking his thumb in the ass of every animal he could find.

all in all, RIP. have fun raping the monkeys in heaven.

I was watching Dirty Jobs on the discovery channel. There was one episode where Mike Rowe had to clean, feed, and find the sex of crocs. You actually have to stick your thumb up their ass and feel around for a dick. Your post reminded me of that.

"It shows that the, Steve came over the top of the ray, and then the tail came up and spiked him [in the chest] and he pulled it out, and the next minute he's gone. And that was it, and then the cameraman had to shut down," Stainton said.
