RC racing.

I just bought a used Losi XXX4 4WD radio controlled car to race at my local indoor off road track. I already have an Associated B4 2WD buggy that I recently dusted off to go racing again. I've gotten back into RC to feed the racing addiction in the offseason of LRRS. I also have an X-ray M18 4WD touring car that I race at a carpet track locally as well when I don't feel like running offroad.

Anybody race RC here?

oh nice. I'll tell ya, I went racing last Friday night, and I spent a whopping $8. Initial investment is high, but with electric, its only repairs and race entry.

Never tried an 1/8th scale.. those things FLY though.

I race a T4 in the off season of riding. Got a Novak 4.5 brushless in her. Needless to say, horsepower is never an issue.

I find myself spending around $40 a week in racing. Especially on-road with brushes, foams and very hard boards that I seem to whack an aweful lot. Off-road is better but tires go quick in mod class. At $25 a set, it gets pricey.

I have a TC4 setup for carpet but I don't run it as it's not competitive against the Corally's, X-Ray's and whatnot.

I've got an older novak SS5800 brushless in my B4, and a brushed 13T single in the 4WD. the 4WD needs tires, but that is all so far. Once its time to replace the 13T, I'll go brushless.. I was looking at the specs.. dude. the 4.5 is like 9krpm per volt! NUTS! my 5800 is, well, 5800rpm per volt. I can't imagine how fast the 4.5 or worse yet a 3.5 must be.

Pratt's is still there.
I've got a T-maxx with a Fantom FR-18 in it, keeps up with traffic pretty well. I can just about keep up with my friends stock T-maxx if I stay in first gear, of course in second mine's gone!

+1 on the Associated RC-10. I have one buried somewhere in my cellar. I put a lot of coin into that thing:

Carbon chassis, MIP gear box, high RPM open motor.

Used to run it on pavement with a Monte SS body on it. That thing was FASSSSST!

I used to run a a modified can with a stock wind on the dirt .
& did good . Full mod. motors was to much wheel spin .My set ups made it easy to put the power on the ground . I had my car set up so it was easy to make fast laps . I let my buddy run my car & he said wtf this car goes around the track by it self .
My first street was a old old F1 car . I modified it & ran a lexan body on it, we used to run them on the 1/4 midget track in back of my house . For the most part we used to run our dirt cars on a track we built in my buddys back yard , beer drinking with no kids around & so on .. Lots of $$ spare diffs, motors, brushs, front end parts, tires , speed controls ,servos , & working on it all week LOL sounds like bike racing ..

-few heavily modded RC12L's (1 roller, the rest in pieces)

haven't raced in years, haven't even gotten the NTC3 into 3'rd.

Re: RC racing.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I just picked up a 1/10 scale nitro buggy for my son's b-day. Damn that thing is FAST!! Since it's going through break-in, we didn't open it up past half throttle, but it probably goes 30 at half throttle.

And you can get into the nitro cars for short money now, compared to when I used to race electrics back in the late 80's.

I got the car and complete starting kit for under $200, shipped. Going to head to a local school tomorrow where there's plenty of space top rip it up.

The car:

And where I got it:

RaidenTech.com Sells RC Helicopter RC Plane Wireless Spy Camera Electronic Gadget Nitro Gas Car & RC Toys

They even sell RC bikes like this one:

New Toys!! 1:5 Scale Electric Motorcycle RTR Red Version
+ YouTube Video

Re: RC racing.

I had intentions of racing nitro RC's at one point but not very many tracks up here in VT.

I started with a Traxxas nitro rustler 2.5 and then upgraded to a Revo. Sold both last year because with work and motorcycle, I didn't have time to race let alone use them.

I had thought about getting back into it and maybe making an electric crawler. I don't understand electrical stuff all that well but my wife is an electro-mechanical engineer so I rely on her quite a bit for know-how.

Re: RC racing.

I used to race RC cars back in the day as well. Off-road buggies. Loved it. Started with a Kyosho Ultima II (entry-low midlevel car) and then upgraded to a Traxxas TRX-3 (high end electric buggy). This is when everyone was getting the Losi Double-X's and I bucked the trend with my underdog TRX-3. Then the race truck trend hit and the buggies started dying off. I still like buggies. Liked kicking their asses with that thing. Matt Stone held up the Associated front with a RC-10 aluminum tub chassis.

Those things were stupid fun. If there was a good indoor dirt track nearby I'd seriously consider it for the off-season.

I know gas cars are the shit now thou...

Re: RC racing.

So what's the best bang for the beginner buck?
Used to build Tamiya's when I was a kid. Last car was a Fox with some upgrades. I was surprised to see the Grasshopper and Hornet are still around. Good times.
Wouldn't mind dipping back in a little.
I wouldn't want anything already ready to run... The build was a big part of the appeal for me... Is there a good mid-level beginner kit someone could recommend? I think I'd prefer electric unless the nitro stuff has gotten a lot quieter.

Re: RC racing.

My first electric RC was Grasshopper. I moved form that to an RC-10. That damn thing took me nearly 230 hours to build. I ended up dumping close to a G on that hobby. Racing was an awesome time. I had setups for both dirt tracks and parking lot racing.

As for the sound of nitro cars, they're still as loud as ever. Not much change in that. I got the setup for my son for $159, plus $15 for the starter kit.

The remote and receiver are on the low end, so the range isn't that great. But the thing flies. We went to a local school and ran her out in the parking lot. When it hit 2nd gear, it just took off like a rocket.

230 hours sounds good. a $grand$ notsomuch
So where does a guy who has a heated machine shop in his back yard and a distaste for TV begin? I'd much rather be out there building something than sitting in front of the plasma.

Oops. 230 should've been 20. If any RC took me 10 days to build, I would have thrown it through the wall.

Re: RC racing.

I used to be all kinda of into this shit

I still want to dig out my old XXT and do a brushless setup in it for fun!

trick photo

check out Tower Hobbies - Radio Control ( R/C or RC ) Cars, Trucks, Airplanes, Boats and Helicopters

I recommend anything by team losi or team associated.

Pick what you want for a kit (truck, car, etc)

get a radio, charger, and battery

Comes as a kit, some of the most fun is building one!

That's pretty cool. Too bad it's an R6

I remember when Tony brought his honda race rep RC bike up during an LRRS weekend... that was pretty fun. I wouldn't mind one of those things if I could find one cheap enough.

Think it mighta been this one (sold out & discontinued)

Re: RC racing.

RC racing is a sinkhole for money. I literally was spending less racing 3 races a weekend at Loudon than racing two races a week in RC.
