Snake.

I adopted this little friend today... I've wanted a snake since forever. BUt I didn't want one that would get too big, I knew I wouldn't enjoy it as much if it could eventually kill me. So I got this baby corn snake, it will get to about 4-5 feet long, with a body about the size of a golf ball, maybe smaller. I don't know yet if it's a female or male, it's still too young. The little fucker already shed a drop of blood and bit me on the finger...LOL The very cool thing about it is that it got a perfect heart shaped on top of it's head, he's beautiful...

Small snakes like corns and rats do not like being handled a lot. If you are going to try to, you have to handle them all the time so the get may used to it.

dhuze (and Nikon), I will take advices from you guys....I need to go back today and buy a fluorescent light and I'll exchange my tank for a bigger one, the one I got is too small I think. They told me those little guys were one of the most docile snakes to have...of course I'd like to handle him (her?) quiet often, I didn't get a snake to look at it thru the glass only... What kind of snakes is it, in your tank? They're beautiful...

corn snakes make great pets and are very easy to handle once they get used to it. i myself have a finger shredding Asian Cave Dwelling Rat Snake and a rather lazy and shy Borneo Blood Python. perhapse i'll try to get some picture up later.

don't use a flourecent light.... it is bad for reptile's eyes. go to a pet shop and buy a full spectrum reptile light. alternatly you could use a small standard house bulb for illumination and a ceramic heat emiter to keep the temp up. this is the best option so you can still keep the little fellas warm at night without leaving the light on. although with corn snakes ou don't have to keep them to hot. my Blood Python (Fluffy) needs to be kept at a steady 85 with a basking spot of 95. you can get away with a tank in the upper 70s and a basking spot of 80-85 for a corn snake.

if you have any more questions feel free to ask. i used to keep corn snakes as a kid before moving on to more challanging snakes.

I don't see any pics...

And yeah, I made a mistake, I didn't mean fluroscesent light...I got a ceramic, 100 watts, "SunGlo" daylight lamp...I got my little buddy a fake vine to roll around, a wood "cave", some plant, and I'll get her a piece of Malaysian wood next time I go to Hadley for my fish.

The brown snake is a Ball Python and the other is a Redtail Boa.

How big is your tank? 10 gallons is big enough for a corn snake although a bigger tank would be better because it will keep the snake more active. I keep 2 bulbs going in my tank. 1 150watt day glow and 1 150 watt infrared. the infrared stays on 24 hour the day glow is on for about 12 hours. it gives the snakes a heat cool cycle like in the wilderness and it gives them a night day cycle also.

She got her first meal at home yesterday! I first put the tiny mice in the same bucket, but not too close....she didn't seem to see it. Then I took the thing and put it right on her, and she almost instantly snapped at it!! Then slowly...she started swallowing it slowly....I took many pics, but I made the mistake to put a white sheet of paper underneat the bowl and with the flash, it all came out WHITE...this is the best one I could salvage from her swallowing the mice:

Then a little later, you can see the mice a little further down her body where it's slightly swollen:

Another one:

This is the new home I made for Bebe (she's sleeping right in the left upper corner of the tank after her feeding):

Took some pics of her beautifull markings:

After feeding your snake you shouldn't handle it for a couple days so it can digest it's food. Otherwise it might regurgitate it.

Ok....will do. It's hard tho...it's nice to take her out and have her crawl on my hands. She's been hiding under the bedding all the time, never coming out. So I went to fetch her to get her from underneat it, and she crawled in the upper corner...at least I can see her. I won't touch her again until she gets rid of her digested mice....how many days can it take?

I know what you mean. I have a hard time leaving my snake alone too. Sometimes I just play with it until it spits up on me then I take a shower.

I could not resist. I went and got Bebe a companion....I named her Rubie. She should have mostly beautiful, rich red markings with little orange (instead of the opposite Orange, little red that I don't really like...)

Here she is in her new home...

Dinner time!

Happy and cuddling togueter...

Yup! They're very tiny right now, but will get anywhere from 4 to 6 feet long, but they average 4 to 5 feet. Body will get about the size of a golf ball, or smaller. The average corn snake (part of the Rat Snake family), average a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years, but they have recorded snakes who lived up to 31 years...if they are in the right conditions, they will live a very long, happy life. They are very docile, are not prone to bite (well mine prooved the opposite, but I think it might have been because my hands smelled like my cat or my dog, or maybe I touched food before, and you are supposed to wash your hands before AND after handling them to eliminate any odors and germs)
