Question

What to do/see in Portland?

Headed for Portland for a short business trip. Anything of interest to do/see in the evening? Somehow sitting in a hotel room with cable TV doesnt sound that appealing...

There is plenty to do just head to the Waterfront.

Portland is recreating it's self, the Waterfront is booming with new restaurants, bars, theaters and galleries.

Stop by Gritty's Brewing Co. for some great Ales and great food, people are pretty friendly too.

There are a couple of Museums around, The Maine Railroad Museum and The East Coast Whaling Museum is around there somewhere kind of cool to see the old stuff.

I believe the Mariott is near the Airport, which is on the waterfront
your not to far from the Waterfront District. But that is only one area, Portland has a lot to offer. Largest city in Maine. I liked the waterfront because I was stationed there in the Coast Guard and the bars were in walking distance from the Base.

I ate at $3 Dewey's last time I was there, good food, and the story behind the name is pretty amusing. Right on the water.

Isn't Sable Oaks out in South Portland, near the mall? Head into to the Portland, go down to the waterfront and hit the bars in the Old Port if that's your thing.

If it's not your thing, I don't know what to suggest

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just got back a few hours ago. Nice area. Yes, the Marriott at Sable Oaks is in South Portland. I ended up with a lot less free time on my hands than I thought with all the meetings and schmoozing and such, but did have a few cocktails at the hotel watering hole last night. Just about everyone that was there for the same meeting/convention was there so what little free time I had I did end up occupying.
