What I've been up to... (Shop pics)

Well, I bought a house this summer. To say it "needs a little work" would be the understatement of the millennium. I've gutted the house and have been rebuilding it since August. The shop is my little "side project." I started with a new electrical feed. I tore up the existing #10AWG girlie cable and buried a bunch of conduit and manly #2AWG SER cable for a new 100-Amp panel to power the toys. I've been adding some stuff since...
Pics:

Before... Niiice, right? I filled 4 30-yard dumpsters between the garage and the house.

After... it's not quite done yet, as you can see from the two missing pieces of drywall. There's a suspended platform above the ceiling for an extra 128 square feet of storage:

The compressor, tablesaw, etc. That frickin Powermatic saw has more power than the Bridgeport. Keep your fingers away from that thing!

Note the heater in the upper left corner. Anyone who has held an ice-cold hunk of aluminum will appreciate a warm shop. That's the beer fridge on the right. What goes best with a 3hp tablesaw, a mill and a TIG welder? you guessed it. BEER! J/K. Can't really see it, but the KTM is covered/stashed to the left of the tool cab.:

The power hog. (I heard Peter Kates can weld trees, by the way

The other corner:

The Mill:

Wanna run a 3-phase machine on single-phase power? This is the only way to fly.... Variable Frequency AC Drive. Single-phase 60hz 240V in, variable frequency 3-phase 240V out. Run, reverse, speed control, etc are done at the machine. VFD mounts away from the machine, chips, coolant, etc:

So, that's all for now...
I'm still on the hunt for a decent 13-15" lathe if anyone happens to have one they're looking to part with...

How are you going to finish the drywall? A buddy of mine found a plasterer who did a rough trowel finish on a similar shop setup, it looks great. Best of luck with the new house....!

that's awesome!

how long have you been working on it? I hope to someday have one pretty much exactly like that.

p.s. I love the neon sign.

Will the beer fridge become a kegerator?

Not sure if I'm going to bother finishing the drywall in the shop. I'd like to be able to remove a panel here or there to add electrical as needed. I have 120v all over the place, but only have 240v where I knew I'd need it. If the drywall is unfinished I could pull a couple panels and add wires if necessary. But, the real reason is I'm lazy

Kerry (my GF) and I moved in in August, but the house is the main project that has sucked up the majority of my time... the shop is kind of a "side thing." No idea how many hours I have invested.

Very Nice! I wish I had that much room!

I just insulated my li "shack" for the winter. I am hoping to get it wired up soon. (Running extension cords from the house is getting old)

If you wanted to....run some internal conduit from the various points in the ship to make a home run to subpanel, etc. and then terminate it. Cap the boxes and you can then run whatever you want from those feeds, including new circuits that should be easy enough to run since it's encapsulated in conduit.

Or you can be lazy and run external metal conduit over the paneling, that might be more the quick fix.

As far as being lazy - there's nothing lazy about doing the rehab you've done! I'll be right over to learn how to weld

BTW - is that a below grade garage? I ask because in one pic I see steps up to exit then foundation seems to go 18" above slab.

Not a bad idea about the conduit. I think the only thing left to provide power for is a lathe that I have yet to buy, so I'll deal with that when I have to. I may eventually score a big industrial grinder or something, but whatever. I just kind of needed to move forward even if all of the possibilities hadn't been considered.

The rear of the shop is slightly below grade (house is on a hill). The beer fridge sits next to a door that is level with the ground at the rear of the shop. You can kind of see it in the pic.

Definitely come on over and melt some metal. TIG welding is easy! Well, sorta

You just motivated me to finish my garage. 'Course, I gotta finish the addition & renovations on the house first...

Looks sweet, man. But that chair??? The one at the desk under the Pabst sign is THE SHIT!!! NONE of that would mean squat without that chair. That thing is awesome!

...yes, I'm serious...

EDIT: Ooops, I may've been wrong. It LOOKED like an old mechanic's chair...

Trickphoto - Nice score on the mill. I'd like to get more metal working machines myself (mill, metal lathe, welder). I just got a Delta VS DP 2 weeks ago...love it.

What kind of heater is that? I'm just finishing my insulation and now am looking into heating. I want to stay away from those cheapo Reddy heaters. And I read that burning kerosene(?) can cause excess humidity (= rust).

FireFly - I have these 2 welding books. Start with the first one - basic overview of processes. The second is very academic. Best of all, save your pennies and take a class first.

Book 1
Book 2

Nice shop! I like the left tilt cabinet saw. I have a similar Jet cabinet saw (3HP 240V with a 50"+ fence), but it's a right tilt. Of course, right after I bought it they offered a left tilt version for only $100 more... Thing's been flawless for 10+ years though. I also have an Ingersol Rand compressor standing in basically the same corner in my shop.

Can't say I'm not jealous of the Bridgeport, the TIG welder or the Bessey K body clamps on the wall... You seem to have no trouble spending money.

None whatsoever. I can make a paycheck disappear like I was Teddy Kennedy and it was a bottle of Chivas.

I'm somewhat partial to those orange Jorgensen Cabinet Master clamps, but those are a little harder to come by. I got some really good Amazon deals on the K-Body clamps...
98" clamps for about $50 each shipped 2-day for free? Um, OK.

I ended up buying a Modine... 65,000 BTU. I wanted a Reznor, but I just couldn't find a really good deal on one. Local vendors wanted to rape me and online vendors had to ship truck freight. I got a smoking deal on the Modine with free shipping and a plumber friend said he's had really good luck with them. I have Nat. Gas coming into the house right next to the shop, though... so it was relatively easy to get service into the shop (it's detatched).

I'd stay away from Kerosene if possible. I've heard the same things about moisture problems. If you don't have Nat. Gas service, most heaters will run on liquid propane too... just have the additional cost of setting that up, but I know a guy who did it. Had really good results.

Water vapor is a by-product of combustion so any non-vented combustion heater will make the air humid. An efficient gas heater requires a water drain for this reason.
