Importing a car from Canada to US

I am considering taking a trek up to Montreal area to check out an old VW TDI.

Does anyone have experience with bringing a car back into the US? My plan would be to register the car in NH. I was thinking of getting a NH temp plate and getting it back in that way. One other option is to get the guy to drive it into NH then get him back to Montreal, avoiding the border crossing with the temp plate altogether.

I need to see how much sense it makes given the hassle.

As an aside - it is a HIGH mileage car, 245k if you can believe it.
The price is great and if the car checks out it might make sense....or maybe not and I get to see a bit of Montreal in the process!

Thanks for constructive suggestions

Personally I'd say eff the hassle with the whole car thing and canada, and just go to Montreal and see some strippers, eat a bowl of spaghetti and a pitcher of beer at Peels Pub, get a couple of hookers, hit the casino. Buy a copy of the want advertiser and get the same car locally.

ps. let me know when you want to leave. I'll get a bag ready.

Why get a pitcher of Beer when you can get a pitcher of booze instead. Last time I was at the Peel pub we were pitchers of drinking long islands at 9am for breakfeast. The owner even bought us all shots! ah yes... good ol montreal.

just went through some pics of my last visit. I forgot about these guys. Later in the day eating lunch got to watch a bunch of bikers do burnouts. I think each bike did one as the took off. but then again i was pretty wasted.

How is this weekend for everybody? I'll drive, we'll take the Benz.

Seriously - the first step is to call the local border patrol and get some phone numbers. When you import a car, you have to pay "duty tax", which usually makes whatever you are purchasing a whole bunch more expensive. Also, figure out what sort of title the car has - if I recall, cars in Canada only have registration and not titles.

Of course, you live in NH, which is a good thing - if the car is old enough to not need a title, you could always just waltz in to the DMV with a bill of sale and register it.

Oh yes - DO NOT try to have the guy drive it to you and then drive him back. They will ask him a lot of questions when he goes back into Canada as to why he came across the border in his own car and is coming back in yours. They will again ask you a bunch of questions when you try to get home without him in your car. (Yes, the US and Canada border guards do share notes.)

Unless the car is an incredible deal even with the duty tax, your best bet is to find something locally, IMO.

that I can attest too, in my college days the ckick that I hung out with , would make the trip to Montreal regularly, close enuf, more variety than in Lake Placid/Saranac Lake/ Plattsburg area and only an hour away

and a duty free store along the way . we used to go in a couple vehicles, 3-4 people in each, one group would stp at duty free store, in montreal, put booze in other vehicle, on way back, guys that picked up booze always got looked at, never a big deal, open you trunk please, but back in the day, that was unusual
