Those Born 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they
were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get
tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
covered with bright colored lead-based paints .

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took
hitchhiking. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car
seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in t he back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one
soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from
this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with
sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And
we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no
150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.. .... WE
HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and
tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out
very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on
the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had
freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . . . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they
will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno:

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding,
severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and
with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,"Are we sure this is a
good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Oh the trouble we got ourselves into playing the woods.

I was part of "that" generation, and damned glad I was.

I already told my kids that when we move, they will be allowed to go play in the woods behind our house, built "shacks", they will be able to go to the local convenience store to buy a candy bar, or go around the street corner to play with their friends outside...many of those things they are not allowed to do here for security reasons. They were so happy! I bought the airsoft BB gun from Dianne on here, and told my daughter I will teach her how to play with it.

We played 3 pump no face as well. I would ramp it up to 5 or more pumps when using wadcutter pellets for those long range shots.

growin up from 30s to 70s ... that's more than one generation
My dad grew up in 30's, myself, 50s and my kids in 70s

I never had a BB gun, that was sissy, but with 22's & .410s we didn't shoot each other either then for Christmas when I was 11, I got a real gun (12ga.)

The "woods" behind my parent's house didn't have an inch of vegetation that wasn't stomped down on a regular basis by me, my brother and our friends. It's all overgrown now... couldn't cross through it without a machete. And people wonder why so many kids are overweight.

Every morning on my way to work I pass about 15 high school bus stops that are flooded with minivans waiting for the bus to arrive, even when the weather is nice. Why? B/C it's waaaaay too dangerous to let a 15 year old kid wait for the buss without a motorcade. In reality it's not. Media on crime far outweighs the crime itself. It's not nearly as dangerous as we're led to believe.

I wouldn't want to be a kid today.

All in all, I try to let my kids grow up as I did.

In the summer time I was out of the house at 9am to go skate and didn't come home til 9pm.

But there are some things that, as a parent you have to be smart about, in this day and age.

There are predators even in the small towns.

But I can't be afriad to let my kids be kids! And I fight with the EX about it alot. (she's to over-protective)

We never specified pumps, we're were just relatively considerate. We'd play till too many people cried then find something else to do. We even had a dirtbike on each team where we'd try to setup drivebys and other movie stunts.

Of course... as there have always been... I think the general population is much more aware of child predators now than they were when I was growing up (70's, 80's), but I haven't seen any stats showing that there are increasing numbers of them. Maybe there are? I dunno. I'm certainly no expert on the subject... I just find it interesting how many people (the Ex, perhaps?) think it's so much more dangerous for kids now than it was for us when we were growing up.

The FBI's UCR stats list the violent crime rate in 1975 as 487.8, in 1985 as 556.6 and in 2005 as 469.2...

From the US Dept of Justice website:

Man......When I was growing up my bus stop was 1/2 mile away from my house. I had to leave 15 minutes early just so I could RUN with all my books to catch the bus. But, ya know what, I HATED when my mom would bring me in the car. Now, its minivan central in front of my new house every morning and the fuckin kids all live within sight of the damn bus stop. Bunch of wimps!!!!

Oh yeah, I had to walk uphill both ways to and from the bus stop

Yep, I remember friends of mine being on party lines. It's a shared phone line that goes along the street. One person using the line at a time. You pick the phone up and hear your neighbor talking to her friend.

derek

That's because back then, kids knew the value of a candy bar. Kids these days want video games and Coach handbags!

I wonder if kids are still allowed to play the game "Suicide" or if some politically correct prick re-named it. That was the best game ever.
