89 accord, was it worth it?

I've had this car sitting for about 4 years( 100k on it). I finally bit the bullet got it towed from the side of my house and had a mechanic do the work that I dont have enough tools nor the time for..especially in 15 degree weather. The cars interior is immaculate. the motor is pretty clean. 5 sp.
Heres what I Had Done/ And How much it cost.
1Timing Belt
2New alternator( the old one seized up after about two years of sitting.)
3New belts/ Tune up(plugs, coolant, erl,tranny fluid)
4 Front driverside axle.( old one got bent when I hit a curb down a hill in a snow storm years ago.)
5 water pump was leaking
6 new muffler
7 4 New tires ( old ones were cracked and rotted)
8 Fully rebuilt rear end( new drums master cylinder etc....seals.
9 a few odds and ends like heater/airconditioning controls in the dash were binding(cables).
10 inspection.
11 New hood latch
The damage........$1800.00 ( parts and labor)
These guys started on it this morning and were done by late this afternoon.nutty , wasnt expecting that.
I need a car on the road desperately and its a honda with no body rot. Power everything( except seats). the inside is prestine. 4dr.

I had countless people knock on my door over the years asking if i wanted to sell it & said no. I figure. if I sold it I'd end up spending at least 1800 on another beater, that most likely wouldnt be in as good condition mechanically and cosmeticly. Opinions???

Keep the thing. Put gas in it, change the oil, drive it, theres no reason it wont run another 100k.

At this point, does it really matter anymore? You already spent the money.

it was worth it....for $1,800 you would've gotten another beater, and had to been out a car for awhile to find it...at least now you have a car w' known work done to it, and guess what? it runs today!

it's also been said that every used car costs ~$4,000...so why don't you start saving your pennies for another car while you're driving this one? Since it's an accord, it'll last until you can afford another car.

Besides, having a beater has its pluses. I leave mine outside without worry of damage. Road salt and rain will not eat my truck before I move onto another vehicle. Spilled something on the seats? No problem. Had to permanently modify the alternator mount so that you could adjust the drivebelt tension? No problem...this vehicle isn't going to be here forever anyways.

On the other hand, you can def. sell teh accord (for ~$1,000 or less) and get a cheap, beater pickup truck.

Assuming the underside is structurally sound, it now runs properly and reliably/has good compression, and does not need some other huge epxense, yeah, it was worth it. Ought to have plenty of life left in it. My office mate loses that much in depreciation every couple of months on her new Lexus.

spend $1800 on a 18 year old Honda

I am a big promotor of keeping high milage vehicles going but that seems a little silly to me

Bluebook is ~$1800-2500.

If you know it's sound it was probably worth it.

It beats payments.

yeah

I figured that was probably blue book.
I saw a kelly's blue book value that said something like between2500 and 3200 and I thought that was a little generous considering that the car is almost 20 years old.

Book value means nothing on that car. You probably couldn't sell it for $1800, but on the other hand you're not going buy a car for that much that's going to be as good...all the work done, plus being a Honda. And it's low miles for the year.

Those cars are good for over 200k with some tender loving care.

Around the 120k mark, you may have to replace the radiator ... at least I did on mine.

They are very good cars and you did not throw away good money on a bad investment.

Honda's and Toyota's are good cars as long as there is no body rot.

I think for the amount of work you had done you did well.

Drive it with a for sale sign in it. $2000
