having the well above grade is code most places, is it necessary, not in my opinion, obviously you can't use a pit in a low area

mine is a pre-code well with a pit, water got into it one time in the 25 years I been here, but doubtfull it will ever happen again, my property had very poor drainage design, with real good drainage soil that compensated,

Well, I don't know the full details of Hydrafracturing a well but they did it today. I got a call today saying they were going there about 10am to hydrafracture it and they wouldn't know the results until they pumped it the following morning. Now I can only assume there is something related to this rig still in the well now? Because the water was running out the top and down on the ground. Alot of water has come from somewhere because it made a stream through the little patch of woods next to the well, and all the way to my septic area??
I can't imagine this water is coming up on it's own?

they prolly cracked open an artesian vein

I believe that hydrofracking is dropping a bunch of dry ice in the well, it immediately freezes the water in the bottom of the well, expanding and sending cracks into the rocks

I'll ask a well driller buddy of mine if I run into him in the near future before I forget

Copied and pasted

The pump, piping and wire are removed from the well using a hoist truck set up over the well. The hoist is then used to lower a packer into the well below the casing. A packer is a steel, plug-like device, fitted with a hard, tight fitting rubber sleeve. Once the packer has been lowered to the selected depth in the well, the rubber sleeve is inflated setting the packer firmly in place.

Water from a tank truck is then pumped through the center of the packer, filling the well below. High volume pumps capable of pressures of up to 3000 psi are used for this purpose, though pressures this high are seldom reached in water well remediation. Water is pumped into the well bore quickly building pressure until a sudden drop in pressure occurs indicating a break through. If the pressure was high enough, the rock pressure is overcome, the rock is cracked and a fluid filled fracture is opened up. The overburden can actually be lifted up and pumping in more fluid can extend the crack. [The overburden is the rock layers above the fractured rock.] It is not necessary to have very large cracks to increase the permeability dramatically (tenths of an inch or less).

Hydrofracting often results in increased well yield and has been used to get old wells that have “dried up” to produce once again. There have been cases where dramatic well yield increases have been realized but these are in the minority. Most hydrofractings results in an increase of a gallon or two per minute in marginal wells but often the increased yield is considerably less than that and sometimes there is no increase at all.

I learned something today as well after I talked to the company taking care of the well. The good news is, if they don't get at least 1gpm from fracking it, it doesn't cost me anything. The bad news is, the water flowing out the top yesterday...and the water level only being 3' below the surface today is not a good sign. They are going to pump it out tomorrow and test it, and in the same breath, said to keep the area clear for the drilling rig

Oh yeah - well drilling - literally throwing money into a hole in the ground...

You'll look back at this in a few years while drinking a beer and grilling dinner on your porch and laugh...

When I had my well drilled during construction - I got a call from the well company in the afternoon - Yup, we hit water at 400 feet, looks good. I went to the lot that evening to take a look - no well.

The next morning I called the guy to ask what was up - he responded - Awww, F**k, where did those idiots drill this one?

There were two houses going in at the same time, they hit the wrong lot...

Ever see a well drilling crew work at night? I did...

Sounds like someone got a free well?
I'm gonna look back at it tonight while drinking a beer and laugh about it
The fracking produced 3/4 gallon per minute by the test they did today. I'm guaranteed a gallon per minute so I think they are going to frack it again. When they checked it today before pumping it, the static level was 16' below grade

Almost ready for wood!!!

It's all the slow stuff now, work for 2 full days and hardly see a difference
I've got a good 2 weeks worth of trimwork and painting before I can start siding. I spent half the weekend framing up the basement entry (forgot to take a picture of that) and all I have to do is trim it off and roof it.
Then came the trim!!! I started in the front, got the soffits and vents in...and the trim work on the front entry roof. I even had time to put one coat of primer on it

I've got the siding, I may just complete one side for now just get a idea what it's going to look like. 2 coats of trim paint on the gable end and I can start one side.

On a side note with the well, the static level came up pretty high, I can look down it and see water..maybe 15' down? Before fracking, the static level was 360' down. With the 15' static level and the 3/4 gallon per minute recovery, it exceeds the state minimum for that depth of a well (1/2 gpm)

Wow, vinyl siding has come a long ways!! This stuff kinda sucks to work with (end up with a lot of waist to keep the pattern) but it sure looks good.

Almost looks real?

1x6 redwood painted white. I padded them out so I didn't have to use J-channel around them...that's the black you can see now.

I figured you'd have taken another Tardy ride out there again? I can show you a couple roads to get some dirt on it?

Looks great Mark! Must feel nice to do this project on your own!
Buying a house and renovating it is cool, but building your own home is awesome!

Years back I help my grandparents build their dream home. I was extreamly please to help in a part of their dream. I even worked for free. Wish I could afford to buy their house now. Way out of my league @ $750,000.

Good luck completing your place! Looks great!!

Whens the bash to break it in NESR style?

Where are you located? Still in RI? or Mass?

Thanks Mike

It does feel great to build my own house, it's something I've wanted to do for a long time.

I plan on moving in sometime in November, a bash to break it in will be shortly after...

Yes, still in RI. The nice quiet little town of Foster in western RI.

Thanks again for the compliments everyone

Wow I can't believe that's vinyl siding, it really looks real -- and so much better than any vinyl siding I've seen before. Must have been some recent technological breakthrough or something.

It's been around for a few years, though the darker colors are something pretty new. It's life time guarantee against fading and cracking

I wish! I ripped the roof off my house last weekend... me and two buddies ripped the roof/sheathing/framing off and had it reframed and sheathed in two days.. I think it was something like 27 hours in two days... I cant handle this hard work stuff.. I;m a delicate flower!!!

SO ALLLLL my free time devoted to fininishing this dormer... I have a deadline.. 10/15/07... then its new baby time.. I figure I should be able to ride again by next summer

Whats your schedual like? Are you there most days after work? I think I may see a "hardware store run" on the motard in the next week or so!!

Ahhh, you finally added the dormer...geesh, you're giving yourself 3 months to finish it, where is the pressure in that?

I'm at the house almost every day after work, and both days all day on the weekends...well I do usually motard my way to lunch on the weekends from 12-1pm.
Weekdays I'm usually there from 3:30 to about sunset, though it'll be best to call first just in case. Some days I just don't feel like doing anything and go home
Drinking some beer and having a fire Saturday night, stop by

It's a good thing we didn't hang around and wait for you

Lotta stuff got burnt and a lot of beers got drank Saturday night Good to see you'z again Sean and Leah, fun by the fire as always Thanks for diner and breakfast. The rain stopped about 5 minutes after you left, though it was way more humid after that.

Even with having a little fun, things still got done on the house The siding sucks to work with but it sure looks good

No more plastic door hung off a 2x4

I'll be there all weekend, both days. I'll have my KTM with me so if you come around lunch time, we can take a ride to get something to eat...found a couple cool dirt roads to the lunch joint.

It rained pretty good for about 1/2 hour Sunday about 1:30-2pm, other than that it was dry all weekend.

Basement floor is being poured tomorrow, 200amp electric pannel was installed today, verizon came and approved my pole location...hopefully I'll have power in a couple weeks, the Hydro air heating/cooling system is going in next week....things are starting to move pretty good. I'm also hoping to have the well pump and tank installed within a week or so, still waiting on some well testing for that though it looks like 3/4 gallon per minute is my final number...yeah for free hydrofracturing. I'm hoping by the end of next weekend (8/14) to have the front 100% complete and removing the scaffolding...I'm sick of looking at it

It was a busy weekend for sure..again
Basement floor was poured Wednesday so I had to get my ass in gear and complete everything for the framing inspection. I needed to install the basement stairs and build the 2 walls beside them, and I had to get the stairs in the basement access from outside. Everything is done and my inspection is tomorrow...

I also had some extra time to do some more siding, it's getting there

My basement stairs, they are at the max rise, min run for residential code, kinda sucks but there wasn't much room to work with..

Stairs to the outside from the basement, it should be easier getting a bike down these than it is in my current house
