In all my wisdom this weekend...

I have a bad left knee and usually baby it, but I had to do a warrior run w. the detachment sat morning and my knee buckled about 1/2 dozen times. I nearly toppled over and got trampled by 30 other cadets...but i grabbed the cadet next to me and lived. So then I baby my left knee and put all my weight on my right for a few miles. Right knee and hip go. I'm getting f*ing old. So this is where the smart part comes in: I decided to fireman carry another cadet. I take about 10 paces, doing well and next thing i know i'm on the ground. My back gave out. So I have no knees, no right hip, and no back. I cannot twist, bend, or do sh*t with my back. So now that beautiful bike has to sit in the garage until I can get to the doctors. I don't think it's a disc (hope anyway), just some massively screwed muscles. argh just wanted to rant, I need a new body.

Having been down this road before ... this is where you re-evaluate what
you are doing and make some hard decisions.

The body is telling you that it can't do it anymore and if you don't listen to
it, you are going to pay for it with some major pain and a long recovery.

The hardest decision I ever made in my life was to quit a union job and
go back to school for an engineering degree. I had it made in the shade
with 15 years of seniority and 5 weeks paid vacation with all bennies.

There was no doubt in my mind that if I would of stayed there, the job
would of crippled me for life. Plus Workers Comp is such a joy to live
through.

If you got structural damage, better kick the denial in the 'nads and
move on to something a bit less physical cause back surgery is no
panacea for a cure ... it just sets you up for the next surgery ...

i know but im a very determined woman and i dont let people underestimate me...SO it was me doing the carry or a girl with an injured leg who was limping. i took it. too bad i dropped the girl on her face hahaha. the difficult thing with this all is that I'm on scholarship and I owe the AF 4 years active duty...with all the physical stuff required so i cant just stop. I did PT for a few months but my insurance doesn't cover it well and i dont have time to do it on my own. So i have to wait until summer.

i heat padded it and slowly am stretching stuff. Its slowly feeling better...ive had back problems forever and a little scoliosis...but i have to keep it quiet if i want to keep going to school for free. i also refuse to take pain meds of any kind and i dont like "acting like a baby" so ppl think my pain is much less than it actually is.

I also cant stop exercising/riding because im addicted...any advice from anyone w. something similar? I know all the right things to do and not to do, but my stubborness gets in the way of thinking clearly and taking my (road) bike ride saturday is priority right now....

Ya know what? Fuggit. That's what I say now. I got so fuggin' paranoid about my neck & back, my shoulder and my knees (all injured). Now I'm fat. Fuggit, I say. Do what you have fun doin', especially if it's stayin' in shape. Have fun while you can. Yip, that's what I say...

Sorry about the pain you're in Andrea...want some vicodin or naproxen? I've got plenty...LOL (from my car accident). The pain in my knee and back never went away since November, I'm still on meds every freakin day. Not trying to discourage you, but just saying....be carefull with your back...you only got ONE.

If you need me to bring you ANYTHING...I'm just a few miles away girl, just ask. I'll be glad to help..

The back will kick your butt and make you cry uncle if you don't take
care of it. Just about every thing else, surgery does wonders but take
care that it is not in the spine or neck. I kept working through my pain
trying to make it go away and all I did was make it worse. Took over
two years of PT and chiropractors to get back to a somewhat normal
life.

Here is a trick with PT ... tell them funds are limited ... you will see them
every third week or so and ask them for a routine that you do religiously.
They will work with you and bend rules if they see lots of progress with
you sticking to it.

Be careful with back injuries. I was injured at work in December (so luckily no bike tempting me), and spent weeks recovering from that, and it was not nearly as bad as what yours sounds like. A little R&R and some PT go a long way toward recovery. Try to get yourself to do things that keep you away from the gym, off the bike, and off your feet as mucha s possible. One thing I did (since I had just started working out for the wedding when mine hurt) was hit up the pool a few times a week. No impact activy that did dual duty in stretching and exercising. I also started Pilates, but that may not work if your hips are out of whack.

Good luck and take care of yourself. A couple months of temptation is not worth a lifetime of back pain.

Be careful - the pain is there for a reason. It's telling you to stop doing what you're doing. Personally I avoid taking OTC pain medication if I can.

If you don't listen to the injuries now - they will haunt you for the rest of your life. If you need to keep working out - talk to a trainer to tailor the routines to load the injured areas differently to stop injuring it further. I took up cycling three days a week because running was killing my already bad knees. Now I run three days a week 5 to 8 miles each time without any pain. Also - look at taping techniques, and braces to help heel the injured joints.

You are young but later in life you will pay the price if you do not take care of yourself now. How do I know this you ask? 2 herniated discs, artheritis and muscle damage around the area has taken its toll over the last 2 years (almost 2 years). 20 years ago I first hurt it and played through the pain, never finished therapy as I wanted to keep playing football. Once football was done I kept doing the fun filled high adrenaline sports (still try) and the price is being paid now. The back is bad and I feel it everyday. I have been through 3 epidoral shots, 2 sets of 6 branch blocks and one set of 6 radial frequency treatment (none of them are fun), each treatment has helped and now I have had time to strengthen my abs and back muscles but my therapist told me that I will have to worry about my back for the rest of my life. Yes I still do some of the fun sports but I did have to give up some.

If you are getting into road biking (bicycle) make sure you stretch before and after, that is what finished me off 2 years ago. I had the best ride of the season and felt great. I rode 32 miles (a route I did a couple of times) got off the bike and felt like I was almost ready to step up to 50, 2 days later I was bed ridden for 3 days. I barely rode the mc last year as well as I was not able to do a 1/4 of the things I like.

So take care of yourself now, take the time you need. Like was said before, tell your PT you have no cash and aske them to show you the exercises you need and do them daily. You should also pop advil, I know you do not like it but they help.

Good luck...if you need the exercises I can look for mine and fax them to you or drop a copy in the mail.

BTW, I was 24 years old when I permanently screwed up my back.

We have all been there and really don't want you to go down that road.

Listen to your pain, when it comes to the back, there is no such thing as
going through it. You are going down hard if you do.

If your injuries occurred durring cadet training I think either the School or ROTC program has to cover your rehab and your scholorship. Check it out!

I am really old so....

1st find a good glucosamine-Chondroitin (sp FU) BJ's is fine

2nd Fish oil gel caps
For 3 weeks take a total of 4 per day 2 and 2
From then on take 2 per day 1 and 1

This way both ends smell alike ...sorry had to do it !!

Seriously this will ad flex to you and increase the synovial fluid in the joints
Your eye sight and skin will also improve
Better gas mileage and higher top end.

3rd If your stomach is strong then take 6 325 2,2,2 aspirins per day for 1 week. This will suppress inflammation that exists. You can also use the enteric coated ones if tummy starts to both you.

Also then start some flexibility routine like Yoga... we expect pictures

Good luck

Get yourself properly healed up, get on with the PT, and then get on with weight training and whatever else you need to do to stabilize those joints.

Chances are the answer is stretching and lots of carefully selected lifting exercises.

Thanks for the tips...

I think the main thing I'm going to do is see if the AF will cover my PT costs...

I cannot take pills (I even gag on my birth control...) so vitamins, pain meds, etc are not an option. I wonder if they'll give me my own morphine to inject....hmmm??? Maybe I'll have to suck it up and take them, but you should see my face when I swallow pills larger than a pencil eraser! You'd think I got soap in my mouth from swearing.

And gosh, I love working out so I guess altering my routine will be in order.

Thanks all!

you gag w/ pills but would happily poke yourself w/ a needle?!?!

anyways, I'd be glad to donate my sensual oil & massage services for your speedy recuperation.

....seriously.

even MORE seriously: if you wanna be riding bikes 10 years from now, or even be able to pick up your grandkids when you're older; you'll go easy on the back. Student loans are nothing compared to back pain for the rest of your adult life. I wouldn't think you'd lose the scholarship from the AF... but student loans are no biggie if you're getting a degree that'll actually land you a good job.

you're in nursing right??

the stronger your back, the happier you'll be. 2 of my sisters & my mom are in nursing. They complain about hurting their backs all the time moving patients & whatnot.

take it easy before you do some permanent damage. & remember the sensual massages.........

Sounds like you should do like most women and get in the kitchen and make some sandwiches, then do some laundry, and then clean the bathroom.

Two years ago I did the Pan Mass Challenge (It's a bicycle ride to raise money for cancer research). There are different routes but the one I did was 200 miles in two days I think. I thought to myself, '200 miles...no problem' so I didn't train at all for it. I finished it but by the end of the second day I was hurting. My legs cramped up so bad I couldn't get them to straighten. Luckily I didn't do any long term damage, at least I don't think so. You gotta listen to what your body is telling you.
