Rather than using it as an insult to someone's intelligence, I have always used it as a reference to someone being under the weather, injured or otherwise unable to do something physically.

As in, "What's the matter, ya git, can't lift that box?" or "Couldnt get your git ass outta bed this morning and in to work?"
