Possible base assignments...

If I end up commissioning (things are in play like my back, knee and personal issues) my possible bases could be:

Andrews: Maryland
Eglin: Florida
Elmendorf: Alaska
Keesler: Mississippi
Lackland: Texas
Landstuhl: Germany
Langley: Virginia
Nellis: Nevada
Travis: N.California
Wright-Patterson: Ohio

I really wanted Colorado BUT looks like I'm sh*t outta luck. My family has a few condos in FL, MD is a 45 min plane ride home, Virginia also not so bad, and N.Cali is beautiful...

not sure if I'm looking for opinions, but I'm scared as hell. I want to get away but I'm afraid of losing a certain *someone* if I'm too far away. It's just 4 years, right?

If I was given these choices, I would go for Northern California

Famous last words of someone just before they enlist/commission. 20 plus years later, you'll wonder where the time went.

If you have a chance to go overseas - do it. When else will you get a chance to work in Germany, get a cost of living allowance, and have the gov't pay to move you there and back?

If you have to stay stateside, Eglin is an awesome base with lots to do in the area. Affordable housing all over the place (get a place right by the beach).

I agree with Kurt...also ask yourself if your *someone* would even think twice about your relationship if he was in your shoes...do you think he'd hesitate to leave or would he jump on this opportunity? I guess it all depends on how strong both of you are together. If you two are meant to be with each other, he will wait, you can always visit each other. Whatever you choose to do, good luck!

Need more info.

Post distances to the closest race tracks and weather or not you'll have a comfortable pull out sleeper couch in your living room.

The world is full of special someones. Go wherever you want, do whatever you want, and when you're ready to settle down with someone, quit traveling.

if you hold back from doing something you love or really want to do, you will regret it and resent that "someone special".

imo - you are a fool if you dont go because of a guy...thats total dumbass chick thing to do. if it was meant to be 4 years is nothing or he'd find a way to go with you...

edit - werent you saying around V-day you didn't have a b/f?

You're too young to settle down. Not to sound like an ass but long distance relationships rarely work.

honestly, i dont even want to go. I would like to get out, but 2 years ago i signed my life away. Ive done the ROTC thing until i figure out if i really want to stay in or not....its getting close to that time. I wont commission for about another year but picking bases was a wake up call- and not for a guy, i had this thinking for a while before i ever met anyone, it's just added on the pile of things to think about.

i didnt/dont have a bf. and its really not about that anyway. i dont want to miss life here while im all decked out in my BDU's. you have to be deployable in 48 hours (i think, not too sure) so if i went to CA i couldnt spend a weekend home for my friends wedding, etc, but MD would be resonable.

my first thought was Travis (N.California). Its close to lake tahoe...woo hoo skiing, close to the golden gate bridge, nice weather, driveable to the beach and that cool windy road in san fran, trolly cars, etc hahah

MD/VA: not too far from the homeland, some nice history, nice bases

FL: beach, in the same state as my family's condos (i have no idea where they are, i think crystal river or something like that...)

who has the least amount of a**holes? hahah
either one is rideable and im sure they have tracks.

oh, clearly, i know that and i dont believe in them... and who said anything about settling down?? being w. someone does not mean, rather, should not mean the fun stops. to me it means you get to have fun and share it w. someone. gosh.

ITS NOT ABOUT THAT ANYWAY! i shouldnt have even mentioned that i guess, hahah

cant i just be nervous about moving for 4 years and not know where to pick? i could ask for MD and get Germany...ahhhh thats far! i wish i coulse pick italy, id go there, i like wine better than beer anyway

Personally If I had the choice I'd go to Germany. I'm all about traveling to different countries and experiencing different cultures.

If your biggest concern is staying close to family and friends then pick the closest base to home.

i would try to get out for a couple of years anyways...it is good to live in different places if only too see what things are like...if you dont like it, you will appriciate "here" more when you come back.

just my $0.02, but you've already lived on the east coast and FL is just a empty version of the northeast (lived there). I'd move to CA in a heartbeat, but only northern/bay area. if given the opportunity to go overseas do it. when will you ever have this opportunity again? home will always be home (MA, MD, CA, FL... or NJ in my case. whereever.) and you can always go home, but you can't always get away.

At least you get to pick, we were supposed to pick in basic training but we were told to tear up our 'wish list'. The only reason why I get to choose now is because im re enlisting for 5 more years...But I just go where the army tells me to go.

if you're that nervous, take my job for a while, and I'll take any one of those farther than 1000 miles away!

Of the places you've listed....

Germany... without a doubt.

I have a lot of friends who put time in and they all loved Germany... so much so that when some of them got out and had come back to the states for a few years ended up relocating back there.

Cross Wright Pat off the list... not much going on in that area... although Columbus isn't far away and there's tons of stuff there.

so depending on what im actually classified as (med/surg or OB), hoping i get told that relatively soon, but with my options now, here is how im going to rank them:

Travis: N.Cali
Langley: VA
Andrews: MD
Eglin: FL
Landstuhl: Germany

my final word has to be in thursday by noon and maybe find out next spring. I could get stuck in Mississippi , Ohio, or NV (wouldnt be too bad i suppose), Alabama, texas...damn i really dont want those haha.
