question for the cops

or all the other nesr knowalagists. can you get a ticket for accelerating to quickly? im talking like if your at a light on a main road and punch it of the line, but with out exceeding the posted limit and with out spinning the tires or wheeling. i can see how how you could argue pulling out from a side street to get into traffic. thats some times a must so you don't get hit.

now i know cops can pull you over if they want any time any place. and doing this would definitely have their attention on you. but is there any law on accelerating to quickly?

In NH it would fall under reckless driving or negligent driving. However, the cop would have to be able to articulate what about it was reckless but it can be done. There is nothing specifically about accelerating too quickly though.

If there are actual laws such as:

- At a wake, mourners may eat no more than three sandwiches.

- Snoring is prohibited unless all bedroom windows are closed and securely locked.

- An old ordinance declares goatees illegal unless you first pay a special license fee for the privilege of wearing one in public.

then ya I can pretty much guarantee there is a law against what you described.

It's illegal to discharge a nuclear weapon in Middleboro, MA...true!

It's also illegal to hunt wales with a shotgun from the shore in California.

It is illegal to have sex in any way shape or form BUT the missionary position in Massachusetts. All other sexual acts are illegal under deviancy laws.

derek

Anyone can keep their cow on Main Street downtown at a cost of 3 cents per day.

There are so many good ones:

"It is against the law to throw a ball at someone's head for fun."

"Throwing missles at cars is illegal."

"Model airplanes may be flown so long as they stay on either private property or city property adjacent to the county morgue."

and perhaps one I would like to try sometime:

"Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue."

Good thing I have those red-star parachute flares from my friends lifeboat. Now I know what to do with them.....but officer I was just following the law.

I never understood how this can be used for acceleration even if you never speed. Speed and rate-of-change of speed are two different metrics.

I wonder if they can apply this to deceleration too.

I don't understand it either but they use it. Not as common as excessive use of power though.

I am not sure if that could be used in deceleration also, but I am sure they have something.

Nikon, there is also an offense I believe known as "misuse of power" most commonly used for spinning tires

question for the cops

there are some seriously funny laws. here are a few of my favorites.
Tennessee
Lenior County
When you pull up to a stop sign you must fire a gun out the window to warn horse carriages that you are coming.

Memphis
Illegal for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running or walking in front of it waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians.
sorry ladies but thats good stuff

It's illegal for frogs to croak after 11 PM. how do you site them?

Mississippi
A man may not seduce a woman by lying, and claiming he will marry her.

Tylertown
It is unlawful to shave in the center of main street.

Boston
It is illegal to play the fiddle.

No one may cross the Boston Common without carrying a shotgun in case of bears.

Duels to the death permitted on the common on Sundays provided that the Governor is present.

Marlboro
It is illegal to buy, sell or possess a squirt gun.
Silly string is illegal in the city limits.
One may not detonate a nuclear device in the city.

Newton
All families must be given a hog from the town's mayor.
North Andover
An ordinance prohibits the use of space guns.

ok thats all. thanks alex thats some funny stuff

That's usually a town ordinance and not in the motor vehicle statutes so I can't speak for individual towns but I couldn't find anything on that in the statutes. There is one that can be used for spinning tires but I can't think of the RSA off the top of my head and I'm headed to MA for the weekend so I'll let you know when I can find it and give you some more info. However, the statute that I'm thinking of I don't think applies to acceleration, just to spinning tires because these "misuse of power" ordinances talk about exceeding the limitations of the tire traction and not about acceleration specifically so if I were to charge someone I would put it under Neg/Reckless Driving depending on the circumstances.
