It was a Lame ending. It ends any way you want. Are they a happy family? Did a bomb get them? Assasination? Whatever it was it sucked.

I am seriously upset. That's the best they could do! PATHETIC!

I can understand about leaving it open in case they ever want to do another season but come on!

I didn't really catch what was going on with the guys entering the restaurant. At first I thought they were Feds and maybe there to arrest Tony? I'm definitely gonna watch it again.

The whole cat thing was kinda weird but I think they threw that in there as a vehicle to talk about Paulie's supersititions.

I thought it sucked at first. Then, I thought back to Tony in the abandoned house, his flashback to talking to Bobby about how he thought the animals felt when they were hunted and shot. They said that you never see it coming.

Couple that with the sketchy guy at the counter going to the bathroom, and bam, Tony didn't even see it coming, that cut to black was him getting his brains blown out.

Then, I thought more about it. The ending scene showed all of the tension that Tony goes through. He sits in the back of the restaurant facing the door. He looks up at every person walking through the door, even his own daughter Meadow, as it could be someone coming after him. We are made to see that he does this every single day of his life. Maybe that was it.

The Sopranos has always been Life Goes On. Sure, the family is in the mafia, but it doesn't end there. There is an 80-90% chance that Tony will be indicted with Carlo flipping, Meadow has become as helpless as her mother as well as marrying into the other Family, and AJ is still a fucking retarded douche screw up. It started before Season 1, and it will continue beyond the last episode, this is just as far as we get to see, like am 8 year snap shot in their lifetime.

Then again, it could be figurative, and back the the whole "You never see it coming," the ending could have figuratively been the audience getting whacked, we never saw it coming.

Like I said, I hated it at first, but it leaves so much up to the viewer, it's still kind of annoying. I can't wait for the DVD collection with David Chase's commentary and the two alternate filmed endings.

Edit: and there will not be any more seasons or a movie.

As many years as that show as on, and that was how they chose to end it?

What a load of crap.

What a cop-out. David Chase had plenty of time to come up with a better ending but seems to lack the desire/ ability to tie up loose ends (remember the Russian special forces guy that got away, stole Paulie's car, then we hear nothing?!!!) It seems people with ADD shouldn't write scripts.

We shoulda had a 2-hour finale with some serious developments.

Instead...we got fucked.

My HBO has already been cancelled.

I think ejoy got it right, its supposed to make us feel all the tension tony feels for the rest of his life. It also serves the purpose of making people talk. Would this thread exist if he just got shot? Nope.
But with that said, I am no writer, director, producer, whatever. I watch TV because shit happens and I want to be entertained with it. If I wanted to think and ponder what COULD happen, I'd turn off the TV and read Plato or something. I pay for HBO so David Chase can do the work and decide what happens....bastard!

Yes - I also herd this thought, that the final scene is basically completely from Tony's POV. He see's AJ coming, the guy going to the bathroom, etc etc... the going black part could have been him going shot from behind... ofcourse, we'll never know... maybe... although, I have herd rumors of a movie?

They should have shown Tony dying in the end. That's how you end a good mafia movie or tv show. Clean house and kill everyone.

Either he dies, or gets all comfy as the boss of the whole thing. Anything else falls short.

I am canceling my HBO subscription this afternoon.

My take on it...

It was the Directors way to portray a feeling.... the feeling Tony's lives with each day. The feeling of fear, anticipation, anxiousness, and being "on guard". Yet some happiness with his family. It was quite an awkward scene and the final 5 minutes made me feel that way also. I thought the scene was awesome if the intention was to immulate Tony.

As far as the story... The writers told you what was going to happen in the future.... Meadow in Law, AJ in film, Tony indicted, and Carmella in Real Estate.

The one thing that bothered me was the sudden abrupt end with Meadow coming in to the cafe... like, where is the significance in that? And Paulie's continuing uneasiness around Tony. The comment made by the FBI agent, "We're going to win this thing!". It makes me wonder if Paulie flopped and has team'd up with the FBI agent to take Tony down for Phil's murder. Paulie had no interest in taking on that job either.

I wonder if a movie is in the works. Word around the campfire is there isn't... but, who knows.

For the first few moments after the ending I felt disappointed, but after thinking about it, I really liked it. To the people who say it was an easy way out: would the ending really have been clever if someone walked up and shot Tony, or if he was arrested? I think that would have been an easy way out. I like how they show a general direction of where the characters are going through the episode, then it just ends during a very tense moment.

I say

After as many years at the show was on the air, they could have come up with some better conclusion. Something big, a revelation, a big event of some sort. That would have abeen a shitty show if it had been mid-season, let along the en of the series.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

1. AJ ends up saving his Dad by shooting a would be killer in the restaurant. Then AJ enters the family business, and history repeats itself.

2. Meadow walks in on the whole family getting bumped off in the restaurant. Not pretty, but a big event, and it leaves Meadow open to an angry, mob filled existance in our minds.

3. Tony finishes off the leaders of the NY crew, takes over the whole thing, and it ends with him in a spendy designer suit, smoking a cigar and drinking a scotch while getting blown by a stripper at the Bada Bing.

Not just, hey, Silvio might live or die, Tony might live or die, and his family might come to dinner safely. Maybe.

I watched that show faithfully every season, I am disgusted by the ending.

the buzz going around about the ending is pretty crazy. everyone has their own theories on what happened. i found this pretty interesting.

Quote:
"WOW!!!! AMAZING!!!

OK, at first I was really angry. I mean really, really angry. I can't believe though that no-one has posted by now what happened. The only thing I saw that was right, was that in the last scene we are seeing through Tony's eyes. Remember when he was speaking with Bobby...basically saying that you don't see it happening?

So here is what I found out. The guy at the bar is also credited as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. That wasn't that long ago. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil's brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. Absolutely Genius!!!! David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the black guys at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends. This was Chase's way of proving that he will not escape his past. It will not go on forever despite that he would like it to "don't stop". Not the fans!!! Tony would like it to keep going but just as we have to say goodbye, so does he. No more Tony and I guess we are supposed to be happy that Meadow didn't get clipped as well (she would have been between the shooter and Tony) since she is the only one worth a crap in that family.

Thank you David Chase for making it so obscure that I feel bad for hating you at first. Absolutely amazing!!!!"

David Chase himself has said that he is done with the Sopranos, and that a movie will never be made.
