Anybody know jack about kayak's?

Was out on the boat this weekend and saw this guy tooling around in a really cool inflatable kayak...looked like a nice quality canvas.

I know nothing about kayak's or kayaking....but I want one

Where do you live?

Great Canadian Canoe Company is in Sutton and I think do some demo days around the Blackstone Valley. I met some of their folks at a demo day last year.

Are you sure it was inflatable? If not, it may have been one of these:

Folbot Folding Kayaks

Folding canvas kayaks, been around for years, very well built

$1500....holy out of my price range.

Could have been though, cause I looked on-line and they don't seem as nice as the one I saw.

I just want to paddle around the harbor without having to sell my first born (she is free anyway!)

Check out LL Beans - or hit up one of the rental places at the end of the season for one of their old rentals.

The wife and I have Perception Eclipse Kayaks. Look in Craigslist, you can get a nice beginner one for about $400.

From what I understand you also have to look for 3 different kinds of kayaks: the ones to just paddle on a lake, or one you can use for rafting (slimmer, easier to flip over, purposly or not), and one you can take out on the ocean (salt water kayak).

We have sea Kayaks, they have rudders and are more stable in open water but not as manuverable (the longer they are the less manuverable)

It all depends on length and the Hull, rounded hulls roll easier. My sea Kayak rolls pretty easy though.

I spent this past weekend in Portland, Maine. We took the EMS kayak class, it was a blast and a fun getaway for the weekend. There are plenty of places that rent kayaks cheap. Not sure if it is worth getting one unless you are going to use it all the time.

There's a small place on Rt.1 in Salisbury Ma. just south of Rt. 110 but north of Kittens, with a bunch of used ones cheap. I don't know how cheap.. no motor = no intrest.

I've got a Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100 I use for fishing. I bought my daughter the cheapo ($229 I think) Victory 10 footer from Dick's. I really like the Pamlico, but being so short, it's not much fun for distance, but works very well for fishin'. The Victory from Dick's is uncomfortable as hell for me because there's not enough leg room.

Basically...long and narrow paddles easy, but you lose a little stability. Short and wide are very stable, but take a fair amount of effort to plow through the water.

+1 I think you should check into rentals or a demo day - get to try a few different ones and then decide.

Sounds like you can get a kayak for pretty cheap, but it'd be kind of a pain if you ended up not liking it(?). And you'd probably need a carrier for it... unless you have a big enough van or truck you can put it into?

FYI - inflatibles suck - lots of problems. I used to work at REI and we had tons of returns on the Advanced Elements models. If you just want one for flat, very calm water, check out the Perception Prodigy; around $350. The next step up is the Wilderness Systems Pungo 100. $625. EMS has 20% off through July 4. Those are both good deals and if you shop around and find a better deal, EMS price matches. They also have demo days where you can try out different boats. Good luck.
