Step-sisters/brothers

What defines a step-sister and a step-brother, or sisters and brothers?

Of course if two kids have the same parents, they are obviously brothers and/or sisters.

If two kids have the same mom, but different dads, they ARE sisters/brothers, right? Same as if they have the same dad but different moms?

Obviously if they don't have a common parent, I consider them unrelated.

So if we use the term "step-dad" or "step-mom" that means this adult is unrelated to the child. So I would assume the term "step-sister-brother" is also used for a child not related to the other child in the same reconstructed family.

I'd like to see FACTS tho (links, websites, etc.), not what I or anyone think is considered the "correct" answer...

BTW, I'm asking because it annoys me when someone talk about their siblings as "step-sister" or "step-brother" when they either have the same mom or dad. They are sister and or brother in this case.

If they have a step-parent, then the kids of that parent from a previous relationship are step-sister/brother.

My daughter was just asking me if her little sister and brother were her step-sister and step-brother and I told her "no", they are your sister and brother.

Same mom, different dads = half siblings (same as same dad, different moms)

Children of prior relationships brought into a new family by one parent = step siblings.

See, you can't translate that in french. If you use the term "demi-soeur" in french, it means "step-sister" in english. But translated word for word, demi-soeur means "half sister"...

Seems like some people will use the term "step sisters/brothers" for the kids of their step-parent (not related) or sometimes for what some of you call "half-sisters/brothers" (same mom or same dad). It gets very confusing.

To us, my daughters are sisters, even tho they don't have the same dad. And to my oldest, the boy her dad and her step-mom had together is her little brother. The kids this woman brought into my daughter's life are...just the kids of her dad's wife. *shrug*

Another exemple:

Stepmother (english) means "belle-mere" in french...which if you translate again in english is "mother in law". Do you see what I'm saying? Doesn't make sense.

Stepsister (english) means "demi-soeur" in french...which if you translate again in english means "half-sister".

etc.

Their parents met and got married

Then they absolutely told my friend and the girl girlfriend that relations were now incest and they could not longer be together

It turned out OK cause she put on weight

This is how I've always known it. You can get technical and call someone who have one parent in common a half-sister or half-brother.
