If we'd have only listened...I got this in an email from a friend ... funny how screwed up this world is... Anyone remember this?? It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt. Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration. There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning! He was being drilled by some senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?" Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir." The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?" "No, sir," continued Ollie. "No? And why not?" the senator asked. "Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir." "Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned. "By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered. "Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?" "His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied. At this point the senator tried to repeat the name,but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked. "Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered. "And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator. "Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth." The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip .By the way, that senator was Al Gore ALSO... Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners". However,the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands. The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher,"insisted" that all prisoners be released. Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified. It was censored in the US from all later reports.  |

Summary of eRumor: Oliver North allegedly told a congressional hearing that he had installed a security system in his home because of threats to his family by Osama Bin Laden. Later versions of the story say the person questioning Col. North was Senator Al Gore. The Truth: According to the Congressional Record, there was no mention of Osama Bin Laden during the Iran-Contra hearings by Oliver North or anyone else. In fact, there was no mention of Osama Bin Laden in the Congressional Record at all in 1987, the year of the hearings. Also, Senator Al Gore was not a member of the joint House-Senate Iran-Contra Committee and did not do any of the questioning. One of the charges against North at that time, however, was his accepting a security system for his home as a gift. He said he needed it because of threats against himself and his family by Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal. Paul Bedard whose column WASHINGTON WHISPERS appears on USNEWS.com contacted North who confirmed that he never referenced Bin Laden who, in fact, became a friend of the U.S. against Soviet invaders of Afghanistan. |

Very interestingbut both are false: The one about Ollie North is pure fantasy, he never said any of those things at the grand jury. The second one is not true either. It was Mahmoud Atta (no relation) who blew up the bus in Israel. That one was reported by a news station about the time of the identification of Mohammed Atta, but was then cleared up as a case of mistaken identity. degsy |

If we'd have only listened...well I just thought I'd share it.... especially since a request was made so if I didn't post it someone else would have anyway as I'm told.... Besides - you may all be right ... no biggie really. I decided months ago to stop watching the news ... one day after getting really upset by everything that was being reported... the funny thing about that is because I stopped paying attention to the news, I didn't know right away about even any of the sniper stuff that was going on. So it's a toss up... watch the news, be informed but also depressed by everything going on. Or don't watch the news or pay attention to the news of any sort, be uninformed but a happier person lol. |

If we'd have only listened...Well, the way I see it is that if this misinformation is going around then that in itself is newsworthy. People get misinformed by these emails and it shaped their opinions about certain things. Just because someone writes something doesn't make it true and the more of these hoaxes that are known about the better. By the way, the one about the Daily Mirror newspaper in England being anti- American is also bullshit. The Daily Mirror is a staunch follower of the current government in Britain (Tony Blair is left wing, just like the Daily Mirror) and we all know how close Tony Blair and George Bush II are, so it just doesn't make sense. Again, this kind of stuff is written by people who want to shape political and social views by spreading lies and rumour in the hope that people take the bait, and it actually works! One of the guys who works with me came up to me the other day and said "So what the fuck is this fucking Daily Mirror all about then?" He started to get on my case about British anti-Americanism all because of an email he received that said the British were anti-American. He looked an ass when I told him I knew exactly where he had heard it and that it was total bullshit. He actually used the old "You would all be goosewalking around in black boots chanting seig heil if we didn't dig you out in WWII" line. Sheesh, how many times have I heard that? degsy |
