Things to look for in a GPS.

Thought I'd ask here what kinda features people think are useful for bike and car use.

What do people recommend in the 200 dollar range?

Saw the Mio C220 for sale somewhere & the price looked right ($175) but I haven't edjumakated myself yet in GPS's....

Or maybe a refurbished Magellan roadmate 2000 for a few bucks more.

I have herd some good things about the Mio... never used it myself. Really depends what you want the GPS to do - do you want it to just be a GPS, or do you want it to play mp3's, bluetooth, and have real time traffic.

The biggest things for a "budget" GPS in my opinion are:
1. All maps pre-loaded
2. Update to date points of interest
3. Easy to use interface (especially if its not touch screen)
4. Quick satellite acquisition (helps when you get off the plan 1000 miles away)
5. Stability - I have herd some stories about GPS' that aren't stable and lock up constantly

don't need it for MP3's... just a solid unit for maps, directions, easy to see on the bike, something that records where i've gone etc.

Oh & I love HUGE discounts

I think if I ever invest in a gps unit it will have to have the voice command through a headset. Recently, I have been on some rides where guys have attempted to navigate using gps and it seems like so much of a distraction it's not even funny.

bigger screen = more $$$$ but worth it IMHO

best screen for the $$ is a Garmin 276C, refurbished units available for under $400, but loaded map is just basic, memory is proprietary instead of SD

Zumo 450 can be found for under $500, almost as good a screen as the 276C (same size, but not the same resolution) comes loaded with maps, extra memory is SD

I doubt you'll find a decent screen size for $200

REFURBISHED Garmin iQue 3600 Integrated Color Palm PDA GPS Auto Bundle with 1 GB Memory Card
Garmin Refurbished Quest, Garmin Refurbished Quest Autorouting GPS, P/N: 010-N0306-00 - GPS City

or this, but it's a little outta my price range
REFURBISHED Garmin nuvi 350 Portable Automotive GPS System

Look around all the site's you visit ! There's always someone that has upgraded !

Advrider , I-BMW.com , K-Bikes.com, .....

Most touring bike site's you'll find some .
I did and found a 2610 loaded with all the goodies for $300.00 .

Two years ago that unit with all the gear I have was $1000.00 !!!!!!

Good luck , Stevie B

Hmmm... Think we might have a winner...
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?...0&locale=en_US

I found it online for 310.... 100 bucks over my budget, but it speaks street names & plays mp3's, which means it's also got a headphone jack... so i can throw it in the tank bag, throw on the headphones, listen to tunes & get precise audible turn-by turn directions

Now if only I can find something that does that for 200 bucks

The Nuvi is great for a car but dont buy it for the bike. That funny looking thinig in the back is the antenna. You have to flip it up to make it work and that wont go in a tankbag too well. Seriously, get a zumo 450, its only 200 more than you want to spend. Rob a kid on the corner or something.

I've got a Nuvi and it works friggin awesome for the car... I haven't tried it on the bike yet.

That antenna on the back pivots... I think it can go vertical so that it lays flat.

I ended up going all out with the 680 for traffic reports, MSN reports, bluetooth, etc etc. That one was for the wife's car... and I'm thinking of one of the lower end models of Nuvi for the bikes.

The screen is huge for portable GPS and the voice part works great for announcing roads.

Headphone jack...pfft...if you're gonna spend that kinda money you might as well get bluetooth. And widescreen.

Buy.com - Mio DigiWalker C520 - Portable GPS System - C520

I got one of these. I'll bring it up to the next race weekend so you can check it out.

i have an iQue M5 and the map pocket hits the screen which causes it to leavbe the navigation screen and go into zoom mode...pita not too mention it is almost impossible to see during the day....whatever you get, get a mount for the bike, preferably with a power adapter..

if i had to do it all over I'd get a rugged waterproof stand alone GPS. $.02

And dimes to dollars (specially living in the city) I'd get something with Traffic.

Also remember the Tom Tom AND all the Nuvi's - are not waterproof or even water resistant in the least.

I have a 2720 on my klr, love it. This is actually my second one, first one I sold but regretted it.

Yeah, i'd rather have something waterproof or something that can fit in a map pocket... so slim.

and bluetooth isn't necessary, but something I do want is a GPS w/ more than a 4hr battery life. 8hrs preferred.
