Anyone used Vonage?

Just moved into a new place, their $15.99 plan looks pretty good -- better than anything on offer from those soulsuckers at Verizon. I've heard that Vonage's customer service isn't the best, specifically that it's hard to cancel their service. Anyone got personal experience with call quality? I have a cell phone so I'm not real worried about the E911 shenanigans.

call quality seems to be on par w/ a cell phone. I have "internet lite" from my cable company, but it's still pretty good. free calls to the US & Canada.

you want an invite? get a month or two free that way. (and so will I)

I use the $14.99 residential basic 500 minute plan (just under $19 a month with tax) and love it. I don't use my home phone much and never even come close to 500 outgoing minutes. (all incoming is free)

I love that it;s nationwide service, so no long distance carrier is required. It also includes call waiting, voicemail, call forwarding, and caller ID at no extra cost.

Plus, you can have your voicemails sent to email with an attached wav file, so you don't even have to call to check if you get a voicemail.

I'm yet to deal with their customer service, except for the initial setup, which takes a few days to transfer your old number, if you opt to do that. Their call quality is great as well.

But you can't beat the price, especially if you don't use your home phone much and hate paying Verizon a minimum of $30 for a minimal package.

Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping to hear. I loathe Verizon at the best of times, and I don't wanna pay $25 for a limited service (local only) and then have to pay more if I want caller ID... fvck that. Sounds like it should be on! Like donkey kong.

I've been using the Vonage unlimited plan for over 3 years now and haven't had one complaint yet. When the power goes out, I hook up my cable modem, router, and vonage box to a UPS and I can still have phone access.

If you do want Vonage, shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a referral which will save me some money for a couple of months.

Vonage has been great for 3+ years. I did have a VoIP router die and the troubleshooting/customer service was a bit slow to diagnose a bad router but that's what I get for $15 a month.

Like Jane mentioned, my only problem with Vonage is their theme song.

Thanks for all the input guys, I got my Vonage router in the mail last night & installed it. It works great, I called my parents in Australia and the call quality was pretty good - and 5c/min! Is verra verra nice.

Welcome to the club!

Even though I don't know you, we can still call eachother for free!

Now that I think about it, I have the unlimited plan so I can talk to most anyone for free (with my monthly payment).

If you're using Comcast and have a real firewall set up on your network you'll run into problems with calls longer then 15 minutes. My phone will just stop. I reset the firewall and reboot the phone and I'm set to go. Otherwise no problems...

Many moons ago I had a similar problem. Since then I have given the phone box a fixed IP and I port forward the 4 ports that Vonage uses. Since doing that, I've never had an issue.

Love Vonage, had it almost 2 years now. I tried Tomato (or something) before Vonage and it wouldn't work so I scrapped it after a few weeks.
