Building a new PC but....

Why does RAID drivers still come on floppy disk???

Hellgate London forced me to build a new gaming PC.

Intel board, Intel E6700, 4 gigs of Corsair, Nvidia 8800GTS, 2 80gig HD's in RAID 0, 1 dvd burner optical. No floppy.

Open the intel board box, and two floppies staring at me for RAID drivers. Who builds with a floppy drive anymore?

Plus - I'm running a dual boot of XP and Vista home Premium. So, do i need to boot RAID drivers for Vita AND XP?

And I now have to pick up a floppy drive on the way home.

Also- thinking about picking up a 200 gig HD as a back up. Running a RAID 0+1 ? Would this mirror the RAID 0, and in case one of my RAID drives die I wouldn't lose any data? I want to RAID 0 for performance...

Any ideas?

Check on the HD manufacturer website for the driver files to be downloaded, or burn the files from the floppy to a CD.

or use a USB stick instead of wasting a CD on a 1MB file.
I've always kept a FDD around just for that reason. LEt me know how you like the GTS card. I'm planning on an 8800GT card on my new system im putting together. going with 2GBx2 of DDR800 Corsair too. Forget what the E6700 chip is. I'm going with the 2.4 or 2.66 Core 2 Quad

Only real way to keep RAID 0 level performance with having a mirror is a RAID 1+0 (commonly called RAID 10). You'll need more drives for that.

Writing the parity bit is processor intensive.

why bother with the stupid raid at all? it's a home pc. you turn on and off all the time. keep your data somewhere else and when HD goes or when it feels clogged up just reload OS and you ahve a clean machine. simple.

I want the RAID for performance, since this machines games about 90% of its life.

Plus - I've never done a RAID set-up before and wanted to try it out.

I would run the level0 and then run a large single drive non-raid as a backup. Whatever speed you gain by going raid 0 you will lose adding a single drive mirror to.

It is multi-player but that's not why I bought it. It does have a great single player campaign.

It chugs on my AMD 4200 with a 7600GT card in certain areas. Frame rates get single digit in certain areas.

I wanted to build a DX10 machine anyway, and this was a great excuse.

For multi-player, I drive. GT Legends and GTR2 for the most part. Great sims.

I have it at mid-range settings. Looks good, but certain levels bog it down that have a huge amount of bad guys shooting at me.

I don't do any multi-player shooters. Just not my thing. And first person shooters often make me sick - motion sickness?

Only on-line for me now is driving. Some very competitive leagues out there. The Alfa league at Speedgeezers is nuts.
