Cheese, I don't pay for health insurance either. My company pays 100% of it.

You pay for it in one way or another, they have pay you less to afford to pay your health insurance.

I go to PF as well because its down the street from my house and open 24 hours a day. I suppose if I wanted smoothies or aerobics classes, I'd look elsewhere, but they have an elliptical and all the other machines I use, which is all I need.

Re: planet fitness

The planet Fitness here in Cranston got bought by 24 hour fitness. But they used to have a good number of treadmills and elliptical trainers. kind of tight on space for the weight lifting equipment.

Re: planet fitness

So according to this thread:

No deadlifts
No dropping weights
No heavy dumbbells
A siren that goes off when you violate the rules (Really?)

and $10/month

Sounds like a crappy gym.

Re: planet fitness

Not now chief, i'm in the zone!

Yeah those are at every gym it seems. I like to lift and hit the sauna/steam room after. If a gym has that i dont really care who goes, what it looks like and all that.

All the big chain gyms seem to cater to the treadmill/elliptical/nautalists crowd; which is fine it gives them lots of business and gives you a chance to get some cardio in when the weather's not so good.

And all the small gyms that have a decent amount of free weights and benches all have equipment for the 70's.

I've been a member, i liked it, just couldn't get to the gym as much as i wanted too. The ones around here were open 24hrs so it worked well with my previous job.

24 Hour Fitness is the best, hands down. Conversation...Over. I mean, how can you be open MORE than 24 hours a day? It's unpossible.

Re: planet fitness

I wish 24 Hour Fitness would buy my local franchise, clean house of the PF lameness/stupidity and fix the air quality problem.

Eh I think the alarms are fake at least I've never seen one go off.

They allow deadlifts here in Burlington, and I've never seen the staff bother anyone. I think the whole no lunks thing is more of an advertising campaign than anything thats actually enforced.

The little barbells only thing is pretty stupid,. Getting a complete set of barbells would be about 1/10th the cost of one of the 391 plasma TV's they have so I don't really see the logic.

For the price, and convince of having a 24 hour gym nearby It's still totally worth it though. I'll bet the main reason its that cheap, and not crowded is because they largely cater to people who don't actually work out.

Re: planet fitness

I can WALK maybe a half mile because of my knees, but I can run a couple of miles on my treadmill because of the bouncy cushioning. Now, I'm not fit in any way so don't laugh at my 2 miles. I just get on the treadmill and punch in "aerobic B" and start jogging while I watch the simpsons or something.

Funny, I get out of breath running 2 miles, but I can ride around Loudon for far longer than most people without getting out of breath. I see people coming in from a 20 minute session sweating and panting and I feel fine. WTF is going on there?

It;s because your body has adjusted to that particular type of exercise.

I'm the same with inline skating. I can skate 20 miles relatively easy (about 80 minutes worth of skating), but when I tried a pick-up game of 2-on-2 basketball last week, I was dead inside of 15 minutes.

They won't buy bigger dumbbells for the same reason they won't buy the safety clips for the barbells. They said it encourages heavy lifting.

In any gym you will have idiots.. A good majority of them don't know what they are doing. So to say "everyone who is lifting heavy is a meat head or obnoxious" is not a true statement.
Hey go to Walmart and there are plenty-O-freaks... doesn't mean everyone that shops there is one..
PF and 24 Hour Fitness are not 24/7 They all close on Friday night, limited on the weekends and open Monday morning. So its really 24/3

Re: planet fitness

Hmm not having heavy things to lift would discourage heavy lifting, how clever. Now if I could just figure out why they thought it was a good idea to put toilet paper in the towel dispensers.....

Here's a review from someone who would be happy if PF had just named themselves "VaGymNa".
