Re: speeding ticket in Canada?

I would assume not.... The term I believe is "Reciprocity". In that case if you don't travel there regularly what would be you motivator to even pay the ticket? Am I wrong here?

I know NY and Quebec have reciprocity...no idea about mass.

pay the ticket, it is much easier than trying to deal with it in the future if you need to travel

I find it so funny the kind of shit people will come up with, about crossing the Canadian border. Again, I will say it, as of now, what you need when crossing is: a valid drivers license and "preferably" also your birth certificate. You do not need anything else, you do not need a passport YET (they have an extension, but you will need it eventually). If it makes you feel better, bring other forms of ID's, such as social security card, some ID with picture, maybe even a bill or paycheck stub for proof of address and being employed. My mom had brought all of this with her to cross here to come and visit me (I went to pick her up, so I was the driver) the border officer didn't even want to see all that stuff, only looked at her drivers license.

Point is, when crossing the border, smile, be polite and be courteous, even if they piss the hell out of you (yeah some of them are PRICKS), DON'T LIE (don't try crossing stuff you know you're not supposed to), and have those two documents with you (drivers license, birth cert.), just collaborate and you should be fine.

I am 100% canadian, cross the borders regularly, so ask me how I know...Oh and lastly...enjoy your stay and have FUN!!!

Yeah, that's what I thought, but better to be safe than sorry. I went over last year and it was totally easy.

More than likely you're not really wondering about a simple speeding ticket. You're wondering ... what if I get bagged at considerably above the legal limit and what are the chances I'll wind up in a Canadian jail?

Hopefully V and her polite courteous smile will come get you out of the Canadian clink.

Re: speeding ticket in Canada?

Ok...let me help you with that. My husband got bagged "a few times" years ago for excessive speeding....ended up in jail for the night....each time. (funny thing is...this is the first time I hear of it, he had told it happened only ONCE...tee heee....) he said that in Quebec, they can, and apparently most likely will, inpound your bike, send you behind bars for 40 miles over speed limits (depending on the speed limit zone). It is considered wreckless and criminal driving. The fines he got were about $250 (he said the lady judge must have liked him because she reduced the fine to $250, so it was higher) I'm sure it's much more now..that was about 10 years ago. You still feel the need for a joy ride up in my neck of the woods?

I would have been in jail many times by now...and so quite a few more in here, uh? lol (Going at 160km/h in a 100km/h maximum highway speed zone, for exemple....)

edit: If Quebec/Canada has reciprocity with the state you live in, you will have demerit points on your drivers license according to the ones you would loose in Quebec with said commited offense, not your own state.

Re: speeding ticket in Canada?

Both Quebec and Ontario have new laws that came into place this spring. Going 50kph over the posted limit is serious business.

Crossing into Canada as mentioned requires 2 pieces of ID. I have crossed back and forth at least 50 times in the past 4 years. My advice for either direction is only answer the questions you are asked. I remove my shades and helmet as I get to the booth as well.

Re: speeding ticket in Canada?

Canada

Driving in Canada is similar to driving in parts of the United States. Distances and speeds, however, are posted in kilometers per hour, and some signs, particularly in Quebec, may only be in French. U.S. driver's licenses are valid in Canada. Proof of auto insurance is required. U.S. auto insurance is accepted as long as an individual is a tourist in Canada. U.S. insurance firms will issue a Canadian insurance card, which should be obtained and carried prior to driving into Canada. Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr in cities and 80km/hr on highways. On rural highways, the posted speed limit may be 100km/hr (approximately 60 miles/hr).

... just like anything else, you won't need the insurance card until you NEED it. Then, if you don't have it, you've created more drama for yourself. Why bother?
and Canadian border guards are 1000x nicer than the US ones.

I was going to say, we have NEVER ever been asked for proof of insurance passing the borders. BUt I guess if you get pulled over, then yeah it would make sense, but aren't you supposed to have your insurance info in your car at all times anyway?? No big deal then. Oh and speed limit on major highway such as Highways 20, 10, etc. is 100km/h. THey will tolerate up to 120km/h. If you go over that, do it at your own risks...lol

Yes, take off your shades, if you 're driving, turn off the radio, etc. THey don't like it if you keep your shades on. If you have tinted windows, LOWER them so they can see what/who is in the back....all these little things help showing them you have nothing to hide and you are being cooperative with them from the start.

the insurance card for US travelers in Canada is different than the one for the States. On top of that, Massachusetts residents actually do not carry a separate insurance card like most states, it's part of your registration (and causes confusion in other states, not to mention Canada).

You simply ask your insurance company for one, and they send it along. Good for one year.
