Any rare coin collectors here?I have a family friend who has a rare 1800's silver coin, its worth in silver alone is over 50$, but a friend of hers said an appraisal is in order for he has seen coins exactly like it go for in excess of 3000$ random i know, but i was promised a third if i can get it to auction, but i dont know where to start without getting screwed. questions a good appraiser? auctions? not fleabay. although it is an option i would rather it be treated properly. i had a teacher in jr high that paid a retard amount of money for one of those buffalo pennies with 3 legs. i think like 300$ for a fucking penny. does asking these questions make me more of a nerd? |

Doesn't make you a nerd. I used to clloect coins when I was younger as well. They never made buffalo pennies, you're thinking of the 1937D 3 legged buffalo nickle. Which he should have kept because it keeps going up in price (currently anywhere between 500-1500 dollars and if it's uncirculated it can fetch over 20k). Back in 1989 I bought a 1955 double dye wheat penny for 200 bucks and today it's worth over $1500. I have an average size collection I've amassed over the years (close to 2000 rare coins) and I know I'm not a nerd!. Look for a good dealer, collector through your local yellow pages. Make sure you try to research the coins a bit before you walk in the door of the dealer though, most of them will try like hell to rip you off |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here?if you interest was for yourself, it would be acceptable, but it's kinda nerdy to ask on behalf of a "family friend" |

Ill definately look more into it, i just got a phone call today so i dont even know what it looks like yet. All i know is it was handed down to her from someone that had it handed down to them that had it handed down to them. I used to have one of those penny books but i gave up trying to fill it up when i realized the last few were almost impossible to find. thanks |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here?Find a reputable dealer and tell them it's for insurance purposes and is not for sale. I would personally do a search on the internet just to see what came up first. |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here? In America, the dollar sign typically precedes the numerical figure. (i.e. - $50) |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here?i know nothing about rare coins but i do have a cool rare coin story. when i was in afghanistan a buddy of mine bought a small bag full of assorted coins at a bazzaar for5 bucks just as cool keep sake. upon later investigation some of the coins turned out to be from the late roman empire. we figured they were fake but just for the hell of it he took them to a coin apprasier when we got back to AZ. turned out they were real and freaking priceless. guy couldn't even put a dollar figure on them. unfourtunatly he transfered units shortly after and i never heard how the rest of the story turned out...if he sold them or not |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here?I've got a 1923 silver dollar. I checked ebay and they sell mint condition for like 10 bux. What a rip....I thought I had something worth alot. |

Re: Any rare coin collectors here?Just because they're old doesn't mean diddley squat. It's how many where minted that puts a low or high price on a coin. If there's less of a year minted then they are typically more in demand (As with most things in life...supply and demand rules). |
