I found myself just rounding up to the next dollar, and allowing them to just keep the change as tip, but is that customary?

Its like the standard 15-20% when you go out to eat. Just not that much. Between 1 and 5%. works. Also depends if the asshole takes the longest roundabout way to get there to drive up the fare. Then they dont get shit. They do that in NY.

boston cabbies are cool. usually like a restaurant, i tip 15 % or more pending on how good he was. if it was an $8 ride, i'll give him $10. I guess i am not a local.. so when i find a cool cabbie who lets me and alll my friends pile in... i feel like tipping him.

why does it matter to tip them so well? it's not like they give great service and you'll never see that cab driver again. And I'm with newtreads: some of them (albeit the minority) take the long way around or do it off the meter and make up the fare

I used to tip 15-20% to cab drivers, but now it just feels like a waste of money, so whatever $1 + change comes out to, becomes the tip.

I tip them on how good their English was and how good their driving to the destination I wanted was (I not looking for a siteseeing tour).

...that actually sounds about right...unless its a long ride...then I might tip a couple dollars plus the change...
