I need to remodel the bathroom in my condo about (5x8). There's significant mold on the ceiling and walls (who the fuck wallpapers a bathroom?) so they need to be redone. And while we're in there we figure on replacing most of the fixtures too (toilet, vanity/sink, medicine cabinet, lighting - basically everything but the tub) and having the floor redone.

Need to have it done by the end of June as that's when my girlfriend's lease is up and since it's a one bath condo we'll be staying at her place while the bathroom is unusable.

Need someone reliable who's experienced with bathroom remodelling and mold issues (not sure if we'll need to replace the drywall or just strip the wallpaper/ceiling and repaint). We can do some of the unskilled prep work like strippinig the wallpaper and removing the fixtures if it'll help reduce cost or accomodate the time constraints.

Anybody? Bueller?

If you need a plumber I could do it. A toilet and sink are pretty minor so unless you run into a problem, cracked flanged or snapped lav drain, it is something almost anyone could do. If you run into a problem let me know.

Hey make sure when you repaint that you use epoxy paint on the walls. If you are getting mold on the wallpaper then you have a lot of steam (maybe no bathroom fan?).

If you end up gutting make sure all the sheathing behind the shower/bathtub is durarock (or wunda board or just a plain cement board). The reason for this is because mold grows even in the "green board" that is water RESISTANT! Not water PROOF. If you end up tearing out the shower and go to a tile wall be sure to get a roll on water proofing product because grout lines fail and water will get into the wall.

I know a lot about bathrooms/waterproblems/construction so please dont hesitate to contact me. I deal with this stuff for a living.

I'd be almost willing to bet, you have regular drywall, and not moisture resistant or moisture & mold resistant

I'd just rip the drywall right out, replace with moisture/mold resistant, that way you get to see if there is damage inside the walls/ceiling

Epoxy paint is the most overused/incorrect term in the painting industry just to let you know. You do NOT want a true epoxy on your bathroom walls.
A HIGH quality Satin or S/g sheen paint does wonders for moisture, and you can ask the paint store to add in an extra pack of mildewcide for problem areas. For problem mildew using a mixture of bleach and water will NOT kill all the spores, you need something better than that. If you dont kill the spores the mildew will eventually come back through the paint no matter what you do to it.

Oh and Darrell, my family owns a paint store, and all 3 of my bathrooms are wallpapered. In fact, every room in my house is wallpaper, go figure.

The only thing that makes me not want to replace the drywall is that would mean replacing or at least removing the tub as well. The tub's in good shape and I figured it would add unnecessary cost to rip it out of there...

Then again, as my coworker is fond of saying, "if you can't afford to do it right, how are you going to afford to do it over?"

Is there any way to tell if I have mold resitant drywall? The spot above the tub where the ceiling started to peal off doesn't appear moldy, but I dunno if it's something you can tell by just looking at it..

Heh, wallpaper is the motherfucking devil. I just spent all weekend ripping down the wallpaper in my kitchen then scraping the walls of that nasty paper shit with some caustic chemical that's liable to melt your face off. That shit sucks.

Behr has none.
We get absolutely nothing but complaints from Behr.

Well shit, something I probably should have asked about before buying paint for the bedroom and kitchen

So what about it makes it so shitty? The bedroom's done but if it's that bad I'll buy something else for the kitchen, it's only 50 bucks worth of paint and it's going to be a bitch so I'd rather not have to redo it...

The coverage is the main thing we get, especially with the now popular loud colors. People talking 4-5 coats for certain colors. It has a high failure rate, stuff like washability and scrubability just isnt there. Tends to peel easy. Like I say, Ive never used it, but this is just what I hear from people coming in the store.
From what I've heard its not even real inexpensive compared to other brands, especially when you factor in the labor.
If you already got it up, well, too late now. But if youre doing a different room, Id recommend another brand.

And just so I clear up things, Ive never once on these boards mentioned who I worked for, I wont recommend a certain type of paint in public threads, if you want my honest opinion, PM me. Im not fishing for business.

Motherfuck. Yeah, that's what I thought you might say. As it happens, I just now got finished pulling the tape off and let's just say I was less than impressed. The ceiling tape especially shows some lines, it is a textured ceiling so maybe that's to be expected somewhat as I wasn't able to get it perfectly even. But even when I pulled the lightswitch tape off I ended up with a few spots, in one case my finger slipped and I ended up with a nice little fingernail gouge all the way down to the white.

We put the paint up sunday and I figured two days was enough to cure, but maybe with the humidity lately I pulled it off too early?

And just so I clear up things, Ive never once on these boards mentioned who I worked for

Yeah thanks a lot asshole, you need a custom title that says "I'm the motherfucking paint einstein, talk to me before painting" and maybe I wouldn't be in this mess

Latex paint dont cure for close to 2 weeks. It dries in 1/2 hour, doesnt cure for two weeks. If you NEED to tape on new paint, use either the good blue painters tape, or better yet, light tack, that can run under a bit though.
And youre lucky Im talking to you about it this much, I hate my job during the day, let alone while Im at home. I figure maybe sometime youll let me win a race in exchange for this information.

And maybe next to suspension corner, we can have a painting corner? Would that help?

Why would you need to remove the tub? Every single tub I have put in goes in before the rock against the studs. It doesn't matter if it is new work or a remodel. What kind of tub is it? Cast? Fiberglass? Tile walls? Surround?

I've done plenty of bath room remodels without taking the tub out.
