Dubbya-Tee-Eff, mates. I paid $3.80/gal (reg. unleaded) and Hess on Route 4 in Chichester Saturday...

Big Shirl got regular unleaded at Sam's Club in Concord Friday for $3.78/gal.

Our parent company is out of the UK and they always laugh when any of us complains about the prices. The thing is other countries are doing something about limiting gas usage. For example, the tolls to enter london, so I am told, are significantly higher for larger vehicles to deter people from buying them. I also had a roommate from turkey a few years ago and he always thought it was funny that we thought 2.50 (then) was terrible. Now we would happily take 2.50 too! Does it completely suck? yes! do i complain about is daily? You bet. But in the big picture we got it cheap and we arent doing a lot to reduce our use. I suspect the time is coming where americans will finally accept smaller vehicles if the squeeze continues.

When I was in Florida at Busch Gardens I was talking with a couple from England about fuel prices. They told me that they pay $11.00 a gallon in US dollars. They also own a VW Diesel 1.6 litter too to help offset the costs of driving over there. They don't drive their gas guzzler very much anymore.

It only cost me $125 to fill my van this weekend. It's a good thing I only need to fill up once or twice a week.

Not sure if these are the ones I see in Quebec, but they are just as small. I see them everywhere everytime I go up there to visit my family.

I'd never buy one of those, got 2 kids, don't know where I'd put them in this thing.

I wish there was a website you could go to that would tell you the cheapest price of gas within a specific geographical area.

You can't? I have with a KIA, which is part of Hyundai. Its an 06 Spectra Wagon with a hitch. I bought a decent 5'X8' trailer and it will tow two bikes if they are around 400lbs a piece. It wont pull two harleys thats for sure. You know they are back there but it doesn't complain to much.

edit: Its rated to tow 1,000lbs with no trailer brakes and 1500lbs with. From expierence it has zero trouble stopping, its the pulling part. A 2 liter 4 cylinder can only do so much.

Shoulda' bought a Corolla. Two bikes on a small open trailer isn't a problem.

55mph = 45mpg

Re: $4.05 a gallon of gas!!

I bought a big ole' diesel truck three weeks ago today. Something I can plow with in the winter, trailer my hobbies with, etc. I've driven it four times since my test drive. Been riding the bike constantly. It's great - I don't go anywhere besides to and from work if it's raining. If it's sunny I get to take the long way home and burn off steam. Carpooling is out of the question for me, so this is the next best thing.

Your doing it right. Most people aren't. You use the truck when you need it. Not for everyday use. I have a buddy who does the same thing pretty much. He has a giant F-350 diesel that gets used a few times a month. The rest of the time he drives a Civic getting 40mpg.

Re: $4.05 a gallon of gas!!

Having moved over here from the UK, I must admit I dont find the petrol prices at all high - and from what my folks back there are telling me, its soaring over there just as it is here.

What really *does* suprise me, is the mindset around cars here. I was looking to replace my wife's 2002 Dodge Neon (urgh) automatic (urgh), so was looking at the VW Golf (Rabbit over here) as a replacement. Smaller, and back in the UK, more efficent. But what I didnt realise here - engine options! No 1.4l petrol, 1.4l diesel - the only option is a 2.5L 170bhp petrol!

Now the more I look at car adverts here, and their specifciations, I'm amazed at two things - the sheer engine size that is seen as 'normal' and the perceived need for huge horsepower, even in boatlike SUVs.
Frankly, I'd love to be able to get some of the smaller, more refined engine designs over here - it's not as if they'd not drop straight into the bodyshells of a lot of the models from the international makes here - many models sold here are also sold overseas with alternate engine options, and far better petrol mileage.

(To put it in perspective, I never owned a car over there with more than 85hp, and 1.4 litre displacement. Even my Landrover (Defender, 110, for towing + work) was a 2.4 diesel making 107hp)

The technology already exists, just let us buy it

i guess i could but its got 230k miles on it and even though it still gets roughly 30mpgs...its not as efficient as it used to be. im still pissed that i discovered my bike doesnt get the mileage that it should either. i rode an entire tank "behaving" myself (shifting @5500) and got approx 130 miles. 3+ gallon tank = out to be around 40mpgs..not bad right? put the GPS on the bike and discover that the speedo reads 10% higher. so faster i go the more off it is. which in turn means that my ODO is off 10% so now my 40mpgs turns into a little over 30. thats what my fucking car gets. so there is no advantage to driving the bike over the car for me.

Re: $4.05 a gallon of gas!!

that doesnt make sense. one is linked to the other.
2 examples.
1. the speedo in my truck doesnt work below 30mph (40 now ) so the ODO doesnt move when this is occuring
2. when my g/f and i fill up together when we stop at the next station we both have different ODO readings and now i know why.
